intake manifold question
On a 1600 tp can you remove the centre part of the intake manifold with the riser on it without removing the ends that bolt on to the heads ?
thanks steve

When you have the carbies off the riser comes of the manifold and leaves the manifold still bolted to the heads.
is that what you mean?

possibly - is the answer. Can be a real fine fit. You may get away with loosening them.
Doesnt really matter cause you have to pull the alt/generator and air shroud cause the heat risers get in the way
Once you have done that taking the manifolds off is easy.
If you dont have heat risers then it is back to possibly.
I use to be able when i ran my proggy without risers

the reason I am asking is that I want to replace the seals in the oil cooler and I want to pull the air shroud off while it is in the car (beetle). If
I just pull the carbie ,generator and the engine lid off will there be enough room to get the air shroud out
thanks steve

you will need to take the hinges off the body - or at least drop 2 of the 3 bolts and spin them out of the way.
Should be able to leave the carb there.
Should only be the alt/generator.
Those shroud bolts at the back are a real bitch
Do you still have a thermo stat??? If so that will need to come off

no I dont have the thermostat. How many shroud bolts are there? I got the one on the passenger side behind where the manifold bolts onto the head this
afternoon because it looked tricky but it came out easy. Are there some on the fly wheel side? might have to get the mirror and torch ! Thanks for
your help blue 74l

There are two shroud bolts...one on the left side and one on the right. Loosen these two bolts, remove the generator strap and your hinges from the
engine lid. Don't forget to remove the accelerator cable and tube. You should be able to leave the carby on but if it is too tight remove the carby
from the manifold.Lift straight up...it will be a very tight fit. Good luck!!!:thumb:thumb:thumb

On the rear of the Left Hand Side is the ducting that takes the hot air from the Oil Cooler to outside the engine bay...
there is one screw holding the ducting chute and one holding the outer chute.... and another holding the cover over the oil cooler.. if that makes
sense,,,'
I have replaced the original screws that held these on with small bolts as they are easier to undo than screws.....
One of the screws is on the back of the fan shroud....
I'll have to check the other ones tomorrow...
It Is possible to take the fan shroud off with the engine still in... but bloody hard - nearly impossible to put back in...
without scratching the paint.... but then , You may not have a multicloured engine bay... there isn't any room to spare...
so IMHO .. VW didn't actually design for the fan shroud to come off while in the engine bay...
Best to take the engine lid off...
If Yours still has the 2 screws, You may not be able to undo them... depends how tight they are... I don't think there is enough room for a
screwdriver with the engine still in place...
Its a piece of cake with the engine out....

I think you will find there are four
the 2 either side
and 2 on the flywheel side - one of which is under the dog house. So that has to come off first.
Good chance they are not there but should be
