Fan above engine in my kombi, What does it do and why??

There is a fan above my engine in a 1975 model. There is also a switch that some times switches it on that looks like it has been retrofitted below the driver seat. What is it all for. Heating? Can I convert it into extra engine cooling if I dont use the heaters??????

It's a super charger. Very Rare ;)

hehe. sorry it's not really. Yeah it's used as extra air for heating. Normally they are hooked up so that when the slide on the dash is in full "hot" position the fan turns on.

It's impractical to convert it to engine cool, but if you take it off be sure to block the holes in the tin ware as cooling air will escape from them. The Fan has one way valves to stop air from escaping when not in use.

Like Mike said, the fan is a booster blower for the heater. It sounds like a PO has rigged it with a separate switch, probably because it stopped working.
It cann't be used for cooling as it's connected to the heat exchangers, besides which it really isn't powerful enough to supply enough air to make much difference to engine cooiling.

Unless the PO has completely changed the system, the (booster) fan you referred to uses a relay that is connected to the alternator light connection (+ve) and a rivet that is connected to earth by the heater lever when it is most of the way on (down). The idea is that it can only run when the engine is running, so you don't leave it on and flatten the battery.
