Engine speed drifting at idle
Hey there all! I hope there are some clever folks out there today...
My Kombi (1800 twin solex) stuffed up again recently (low power - couldn't get to over 40 - this is a regular problem which no-one can solve because
it's intermittent). By the roadside, I took off the 'main' carby, it seemed to be flooded. I wrecked the carby gasket thing in the process (it
was pretty cactus already). So I made a new one, nice and precisely, from a weetbix box cardboard, and put the carby back together.
Now, the car runs like crap. It smells like fuel is being dumped into the exhaust pipe. She surges and stutters (feels terrible in low gears). And
the engine speed wobbles around at idle. Pulling off the plug leads from cyl's 3&4 (under the 'main' carby): the only thing I notice is a
tingling in my hand - ie: no engine speed decrease. But, she can get to 80 again. Under fairly open throttle she seems to run a little less badly.
(I did put the float back in (the second time - what a doofus))!
Now I'm not sure that I wrecked it, but is it possible that such severe sh*tness is the result of 'unsynced' carbies, which I somehow knocked while
fiddling with? Or have I lost a jet somewhere and it's now just flooding all the time (hence running better under open throttle). I don't know.
Oh by the way, I'm about 1500km from home, between Coffs and Port Macquarie. I'm going to call Mid Coast in Coffs I think.
Any suggestions welcome, I'd love to discover the cause of the problem. Thanks,
Aurel

If you can make it to Port Macquarie, go see Port's Own Automotive. They were a big help when our bus broke down.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

Ah, I ended up going to mid coast in Coffs. Really helpful guy. Thanks dude. The problem turned out to be crap (somewhere) in the idle circuit.
Hmmm. Well, she's running great again now, yeehaa!
