Rear torsion bar setup

Questionfor the assembled intelect.

The rear torsion bars on a beetle. Do they almost meet in the middle of their housing (ie the bit attached to the pan)? I was trying to put the second one back on today and it would not go on as far as required... so far out that I actually popped the cap of the spring plate end, about 30mm.
I am just wondering if the other bar is too far over (No, I haven't taken it all apart again yet)

Anyone???

Thanks Grahame.
Took a look on the VWDCQINC site, but unfortunately the disection didn't do that bit of the bug. So now that I have undone the side I actually had on and torque'd up right. I have both bars in about evenly. Now to buy a new (well, second hand) replaement for the bit that I broke.
