Gearbox won't select forward gears

I’m in the middle of a straight axle conversion on my splitty and as a result, I’ve used a beetle gearbox. This box was bought second hand and I was told it was good before I got it. Before putting it in, I changed over the nose cones and hockey sticks, even though they looked identical. Now I’ve got it in, I’ve connected the gear shift rod and tried to change gears but can’t seem to get any gear but reverse. It goes into reverse as easy as it should, but there’s nothing else. I would have thought that if the hockey stick was in wrong, it wouldn’t get any gears. Any suggestions????

I had the same problem in putting in a L bug box in my 1302. I also had to change the nose cone for the correct mounting. The problem is that the two selector shafts are mis-aligned with the selector arm of the nose cone. Pull the box remove the nose cone and make sure that the selector arm can swing through both selector shaft grooves/passages (whatever you call them).

Have u got the gear shift selector plate under the gearstick the right way around. ??

Also check all the bushes on the chassis that the gear shift selector rod / shaft go through and remove any slack in these or add a nylon bush.

Is the gear shift coupling OK as well.

Thanks guys. I think the problem is at the box. The gearstick is all in correctly and I used a new coupling. I tried to change gears at the box when trying to get the coupling in and couldn't. I thought it was because I couldn't apply enough pressure from under the car. I'll pull the box and adjust the hockey stick and see how I go.

The box selectors have to be in neutral when you fit the
bus nose cone (its a bit tricky cos you can get the
old one off without it being in neutral if you wiggle it
enough).

You can push each selector shaft in out out - when it 'clicks' in the
middle position that's neutral. As GL1972 says, you'll se
the hockey stick will then be able to 'swing' through each selector...

You've prob got one selector'in' and one 'out' rather than
aligned in neutral meaning you can't get any gears...

Yep, pulled the box out again and lined up the hockey stick with the selectors, all good now thanks.
