Brake Replacement Probs

:tree Merry X-mas All from Downunder

We have just fitted new rear shoes to 75 Kombi... having trouble refitting brake cover back on over the shoes. Do we just use some force here, or should it just fit over easily?

Have adjusted to minimal adjustment on bottom winders and can't see any other way of bringing the pads in. The difference is a mm or so, but as we attempt to force the lip on the cover starts chewing into the pad.

Any tips here would be good. Hope someone is handy...

...never done shoes on a Kombi, but they are basically the same design as the beetle/type III/etc so the same principal should apply.

The brake drum (which is what I assume you are refering to when you mention the 'brake cover' should just slip back on if the brakes are in the fully retracted position. Is the handbrake off? This would hold the shoes out further. Is the wheel cylinder fully retracted - drop the shoes off the wheel cylinder and see if you can push the pistons back in with a set of multi-grips (be careful not to slip and damage the rubber boots). This should allow you to push the drum back on with a minimum of effort.

Let us know how you go - even if the above doens't work - I can always ask more questions of those not on the forum...

...oh yeah, are the brake shoes centered? when you try to put the drum back on, do the shoes make contact all the way around or only in one area (closer to either the top or bottom of the shoe)? If they make contact all the way around, then try the above, if they only make contact in one area, try tapping the shoes up and down a little to see if you can center them.

:sandrine Ok. Sorted. Thankyou heaps for being there.
After stacks of head scratching and much humming and ha-ing the bald one finally realised he'd put the adjusters back together back to front! :blush

Tis fun aint it... all this bush mechanic stuff... he's moved on to the exhaust now.

I have retreated to house, cos he started threatening a divorce in the name of Volkswagon or sumpthin along those lines...:repuke safer here, I reckon.

All the best ratty and thanks again.

No worries!

Glad you got it sorted - spoke to my brother about this (on Christmas Day) and he tells me that there is something else to look out for when doing shoe changes on Kombis - apparently many brake places will assume that the Kombi has oversized drums (machined in the past and no longer standard size) and will supply oversized brake shoes. Of course, if the Kombi has not had the drums machined or had also had new brake drums fitted in the recent past, the shoes will be too big. Thankfully, not the case in this situation but worth noting for the future.

Hope you had a Merry Christmas.
