do you HAVE to recon. the starter when you do the solenoid?

I've got problems starting my Ghia - I checked it out as much as I could as per the book - shorting out the two big terminals on the solenoid - and I think I established that the start is okay - it whirrs into action as expected - so its the solenoid thats knackered.

The auto-electrician has said I must do the starter motor as well, but if the Muir book says you can just do the solenoid, why does every garage I ask talk about the starter and the solenoid as if it were one single unit?

Cheers

I'd suggest doing both at the same time, purely to avoid problems later. Chances are that the starter will only need a clean up, maybe a tidy-up of the commutator and some new brushes. Obviously it depends on whether or not you prefer to wait until it leaves you stranded on the side of the road in the rain. It's easiest to take them both out as a unit. :)

A guy i know has an auto electrical garage for there starters and alternaters they just get 2nd hand ones and a tin of black paint, beautiful fully reconditioned.Pull it yourself take it apart then if you get someone to fix it you can check or maybe its something simple and you can do it yourself,if your feeling lucky go to the dyno day on saterday make some instant lifetime friends and then invite the most knowledgable around to your place for a( Maintenance Day).;)

okay so worth doing together.

In the end there were so many inter-connected problems (red light on while driving - Gen. brushes worn, then red light on when stopped - touch it with a screwdriver till it sparked then the red light goes out....) that I thought I need an expert!! As you will gather I am by a country mile not an expert!

What is the dyno day out of curiosity, and where is it?
