breaking's a bit wobbly

driving along is fine...kombi doesn't pull and keeps in a straight line. When I brake though the front goes a bit wobbly, and the steering wheel wants to shake a little. Wheel alignment time?

Could be wheel balance. Get that checked first as its a cheap one.
If you have disc brakes it could be that the disc's have warped slightly.
If you have drums the same thing can happen with drums going out of round.
Both are caused by heat and with the high temps we have been getting around Aus over the past month is a possible if you have been braking heavily on the hot days.

Have you had one of the front wheels off lately? Another possible cause on wide 5 stud wheels could be wheel remounted out of alignment with balance marks.
I had this happen on my oval. A previous owner had the wheels balanced on the car. Both wheel and brake drum had a yellow mark on them , thats was supposed to be lined up when refitting the wheels. I blissfully didnt know this and just chucked the wheels on with out considering these alignment marks. The oval was almost uncontrollable at 100ks. Talked to a VW specialist about it and was advised to check the alignments marks. Re fitted the wheels properly and all was good.
