busted hand brake cable


my 69 has popped a hand brake cable. i tried with no sucess today to get the brake hub off.
i need a breaker bar. dammit, you always need more tools:mad:

is this the way to replace the h.b. cable? i cant figure out how else i m gonna be able to get in and unhook the old cable and replace it with the new one....

also, i have a mate who says that he has replaced one cable, and a matter of 2 weeks later, the other h.b.cable broke. is this just a coincedence or should i do both at once?

Do both at once. :thumb

Completely disconnect the handbrake cables at the handbrake lever, as shown in your manual. The cables can then be pulled through from the back. You need to remove the drums, and undo the bolt that holds the end of the cable outer in the backing plate. The cable should be slack at this point anyway, so just unhook the eye on the end of the cable from the lever and pull it out. Always use a workshop manual until you know the process thoroughly. Just follow it one step at a time and you will have no problems. :)

hmm


that sounds pretty much like waht i did col

-disconnected cable from front- yep, pretty easy cos thats where it broke

-adjusted the drums so that i could take the wheel and hub off (ie twisted those stars at the back of the wheel until they would nt twist any more)

-pulled the pin out of the 'bolt-thing' in the centre of the wheel (sorry about terminology)

-tried to break my back getting that bloody bolt thing undone. i had no breaker bar and FAILED

-i assume that the nest step is to undo the bolt where the cable goes in

-pull old one out and put new one in

sorry about the terminology...
...but is this right col?

PS is it meant to be that difficult to get that damn bolt thing undone. the one i m talking about is 36mm i think.

yeah that nut will be a hassle. its supposed to be something like 217Nm. Dont be surprised if you break a 1/2 drive breaker bar. You really should use 3/4 inch.

YES you must change both cables at the same time or else you will be doing what yr mate did.

you will find that one cable stretches more than the other, and when only one is changed the load is transfered to the old one and it breaks,sh

Kim, if you need a breaker bar, I have have one you can borrow. Also have a 6ft lenght of steel water pipe that I use on the end of the breaker bar. That shifts the suckers. If all else fails a cold chisel thru the castelations will get it off. Youll need a new nut tho.

i m gonna have to go get another cable b4 i bother. i ll have a look round to see if i can find a big bit of pipe. i guess its gonna have to wait til at least next weekend now.
at least i know i was on the right track

If the hub won't come off.


I have 2 suggestions. 1st put the wheel back on the hit the rim with a big hammer & rotate & hit again etc etc. But the best way is to have 3 lengths of 12mm (?) allthread that you screw into the wheel nut holes. Watch the pitch- I THINK it's 1.5 but take a wheel bolt to the bolt shop to make sure. You can weld nuts onto the ends or just jam 2 nuts together. Eventually, as you screw them in the ends hit something- I usually aim at the brake shoes- & then push the drum/hub off.

thanks heaps for all the advice guys

unfortunately i have to work this saturday, and i have only one cable.

following your advice i want to do both at once, so i ll have to wait till i have a chance to pick up a second one.

if i have time i will pick up a cable on saturday afternoon after work.

its a bit hard to say no to the long hours cos i ve just started a new job and i m keen to impress.

The best tool for this kind of thing i have seen is at the VW shop we used to go to in WA :)

They have gotten one of the large sockets and welded it in the end of a piece of pipe around 1foot long.

They have then welded a tab about 3 inches from the socket end at right angles to the bar (the tab needs to be THICK so you can hit it hard.)

They then take a small sledge hammer, the kind you use with one hand and procede to either undo or tighten the bolts :) .....

Works on flywheel nuts too :)
