A few techie questions for type 3 people....
In a reasonably rust free original type 3 ('71) if there is bad rust on one of the saddles holding the front beam to the pan, is there likely to be terminal rust elseware in the beam?
That one clamp is the only place I can find "bad" rust.

Also, how common is a factory looking console between the dash and the tunnel housing gauges? (just in front of gear lever) I've never seen one before. Sorry, no pics.

Also just a general question. The market seems dead for type 3's. Is there some reason they are not popular? I have a couple now and people seem to be almost giving them away! Wish I had more money to collect a yard full ;)

Not sure about your rust issue Andy.

I think the consoles were an Aussie only or atleast right hand drive only thing.

12 months ago I didn't give type 3's a second look...now wouldn't get rid of my notch...I think it's just if you think VW you immediatly think beetle. I think the type 3 following is growing as they become rarer...especially the earlier models.

Personaly Im a bit over the whole type 3 thing. Mainly as I have tride to rescue my squareback only face the hard facts that there are no rust repair panels avaliable to get the old girl into the condition I would like. If you have a good example keep it and look after it.

Also I have a brand new speedo for a 71 with trip in Km/hr if your interested it owes me $350.

I believe that the centre console was an option on the Automatics - it was used to hold the Tach and the seat belt reminder.... two very useful gauges on an Auto! :duh

I have seen a few around the place, but they are reasonably hard to get in good (uncracked) condition....

Mmm... trip speedo, very nice!! Pity it's worth more than the two type 3's I have :cry
Ratty, you've got it!! It was in an auto. Had the clock there and tacho in dash though.

I reckon t3's are the best VW of all.

My brothers g/f has a 67 square, i own a 71 fastback. I couldnt think of a better car i could have bought for $1500. Perfect paint and chrome, engone in ok condition, and only a few minimal rust holes in the floor.

New carpet, chrome trims on the original wheels, dumped. I get at least 1 comment or whistle a week. People love them cause they never see them.




I can do skids.
In the Wet.
On Oily surfaces.

That would make sense - move the Tacho and the clock so that you can see the Tacho more easily...still can't see why you would need a tacho in an Auto... :duh...its not like you need it to know when to change gears!

How long has it been since complete original exhausts were available for 1600TP type 3's?
They look quite different to beetle ones (heat exchangers etc that is)
If a car has one on, would it be factory original?

I reckon the Type 3 day will come. They will gradually get rarer and rarer, and you'll kick yourself for the early notch / square / fasty that you got rid of.

I agree if the rust isn't to bad keep it and work on it. Panels etc can still be found if you wait long enough or just take your time and do it yourself. T3s are different and will get rarer. They drive different from T1s and have their own sort of style.

Looks like a lot to do, but it's drivable and road worthy, a little TLC and will make a great daily driver for the other half.

So where do you get info on type 3's?? I have a workshop manual which, well is sh$t. Any decent manuals out there?
What I need is a wiring diagram. A few inside things don't work and I'm having a bugger of a time sorting it out. It's not really doctored with which is good, just looks like some stray wires.
Anyone ever tried to repair a tacho? I'm hoping it's just a bung wire!!
Also seat belt warning light doesn't do anything, boot light has no power, won't start in park (neutral is OK) etc........

The Official Service Manual published by Bentley is very good, available from Amazon. Alternatively for help with troubleshooting problems, try the type 3 forum http://www.vwtype3.org, they are very helpful.

You may also want to get the Haynes manual because it covers carbbed cars. They pop up in Ebay.
