Stuck clutch (I hope)
I've been out of the fold for a while and just trying to get back in. Nothing flash but it looks like a nice '74 1300 bug. Only problem is
a little rust (don't you hate that) and what appears to be a seized clutch.
Symptoms:
It rolls in neutral but not in any gear even with the clutch pedal on the floor (parked on a fair hill).
Engine runs but can't select any gear while running. Can select all gears with engine off.
Definite normal feel when depressing clutch pedal. (ie feel pressure plate resistance and movement)
I'm after any standard way of "unseizing" it. My thoughts were to either let it roll down the hill a little and slot it into gear
(probably 4th) with the clutch depressed and hope it jerks it loose. Or have it in gear with the pedal on the floor and rock it back and forwards
(same idea but more gentle and requiring extra people)
Is this a bad thing? ;-(
Please help.
P.S. If I keep reading the rest of this forum I don't think it will stay a stock 1300 bug for long. This is great stuff.

Normal clutch pedal
Yep. There is normal pressure when depressing the clutch pedal. I would be 99% sure that the pressure plate is operating properly.

The friction plate is stuck?
Little Ralph, (any relation to Little Jim from the Goons???) your friction plate is not coming off the flywheel. If its stuck via the plate stuck on
the flywheel face it should dislodge by towing in gear & hitting the brakes and clutch together hard & often. But if those fine splines ( why
are they so fine cf other cars????) on the friction plate have rusted on the the corresponding splines on the tranny mainshaft, you will probably
have to remove the eng & clean & lube it with something like graphite or Moly grease.

Thanks geodon.
No relation.
Hoping that method 1 will do the trick. Have had to pull the engine out of almost every beetle I've bought. Was hoping this one might be the
exception to the rule (at least for a while)
I'll be back here with either a request for more info or a success story. Hopefully the later.

what happens if you start it in first gear? the batter will hold out for quite a while. Also I fixed a friends car in which the pressure plate had
collapsed, the pedal felt to stiff but the car would roll, change gear (when off) etc.. only when it was running you were unable to change gear due to
no clutch. |

Sounds like the clutch plate has rusted to the flywheel or pressure plate,
I had a kombi engine that sat for about a year and it did the same, tried every thing to unstick it, rocking in gear, towing in gear with the clutch
in, still stuck solid, had to pull the engine and take off the clutch and put it back on, fixed the problem.

Have had a few do this, usually the ones sitting up the farm in the open.
Just stick them into 1st gear, hit the starter and drive round a bit, changing the speed up and down. Will eventually break free and is unlikely to do
any damage.

I agree. Just put it in first, and start it in gear. If you have the movement in your ankles, try accelerating, holding the clutch in, and braking all
at the same time.

I GOT IT!!!!!!
I finally got my new toy. The clutch is now operating perfectly.
I tried the starting in gear etc but with a 10m long driveway didn't get far. I'm sure it would have worked well had I had the room.
I ended up moving it forward in neutral with the clutch fully in and slipping it into first as it was moving. On the third go it let go.
Problem solved. Thanks for all the advice.
It's now time for ... :beer
