weird problem?

My beetle is an extremely reliable car, and have never had alot of problems with it.. however just recently for no reason what so ever, it will just die... like is run out of fuel.

It happened one and i just figured it was the fuel filter, replaced it and had no problems but however today it did the same thing again, i honestly dont think its the filter again.

But what do you guys reckon?

Need to fix tonight so ANY help will be appriciated.

Cheers

Corey

Hmmm, having replaced the fuel filter once before which solved the problem temporarily suggests it may be related to fuel delivery problem.

Possible explanation may be vapour lock (like the fuel tank creates a vaccum and doesn't allow the fuel to flow especially on hot days). Check the fuel filter again - is it blocked with crap again - query crud in tank.

There will be other people with other ides hopefully.

One other cause of my bug dying unexpectedly then reviving then dying again for no special reason was a faulty condensor on the dizzy. Would be worthwhile trying to change that (not too expensive).

Do you have a tacho fitted? If so it could be the wire from the coil to the tacho shorting to earth.

Sounds like there might be some crap in the fuel tank blocking the outlet. Try blowing back through the fuel tank. Was the old filter blocked/full of crap?? Before you blow it:duhtake the fuel cap off.Good luck!!

how long ago did u replace fuel filter, and is it dirty again (have u checked)

what sort of fuel are u running thru it...

these may help give idea ....

is there a put put sound before it dies. r u stopping half tank/full tank.

how often has it happened...

ie had it 5000K did it twice, 2800k and 5000k every 2500K at 4000k and 5000K.

what heat were u generating, what was day like.

i know these sound stupid, but all may help.

I worked as auto electrician, and had cars come in when each of these related to problem.

Does it only happen when you are on a quarter of a tank or less - specifically after going through a few corners?

Also - drop a tank full of premium unleaded in to help clear the cobwebs.

When I had this problem, it was the condenser....
when it got cool it would work.... again...

Check wires going to coil- points etc that they cannot touch any metal...

Coil High tension lead not touching earth.... and shorting to earth... Girl had that problem and called the NRMA each time
they took the dizzy lead off and checked everything... then it would go OK as the NRMA guy had moved the high tension lead.... this went on for weeks.... then one night the girl said to the NRMA "stay & Fix the problem" and He found the High tension lead from the Coil to the Distributor shorting out in the dark....

You don't have a loose wire going to the electromagnetic fuel cutoff valve in the carby...?

Either electrical or Fuel....

I took the little strainer in the bottom of the fuel tank off My Beetle..... I have an external fuel filter under the tank....

Best of Luck

I just remembered : If Your Points are pitted or burnt
Your Condenser needs replacing...
A New condenser will fix the pitting/burning of points...

Maybe Your Coil is breaking down internally when HOT..??

thanks for the compliment on the engine....
underneath is the same.... front & rear suspension....
I just like fiddling with paint....
Here is a pic of My blue rear axle & yellow shock absorbers..
Lee

For the fellow with engine stopping....

Put a fuel filter before Your pump and check to see if it has any fuel in it... when the engine stops again....
could be something floating around in the tank...
this is a common problem in the USA.... I don't know why??
:):)
If it does have fuel in it, put the filter after the fuel pump....
and check again....

Lee

I would test the obvious to narrow down the problen Check if you have spark. If you do then squirt some petrol down the carb and try to start it and see if it kicks over for a second then dies.If it does then its fuel problem
Good luck

It could be the cut-off valve on your carburettor, if there is one, that maybe getting a bad connection.

If you can observe when the engine dies and you hear a "click" from the carburettor, then check and fix its wiring connection. :)

I was the same as 68Autobug, once I had the condenser replaced it was fine, haven't had a problem since
