VW drag racers in WA
Hi
I moved to WA from South Africa in February, and would like to know if there is any VW drag racers in this area.
Where do you normaly race, and when? I live about 180Km from Perth and would like to become more involved in the VW-scene.
I am also looking for a suitable beetle or buggy to build myself a new dragcar. I have brought two of my engines from South Africa , so I don't need
a car with an engine.
If anyone knows, please let me know.
Thanks
Hermann

Welcome to Aus Hermann!
Tell us more about your engines, what you raced in SA and what times you achieved.
Hopefully someone will find a good car for you!
Cheers Craig

Truly Dave ? I didnt realise we actually had any VW drag racers (serious ones anyways) over here. Is his car bright yellow with a supercharged engine
on Methanol ? If it is I saw it at an early DoVW show over here in the mid 90's, and never seen it since. Sounded awesome with straight thru exhaust
and blower....
Welcome to Perth ! you might find half of SA actually beat you here, but its all good as far as I am concerned.

When I first started racing I contacted Ron & spent 5 hrs on the phone. He did run a blower but I think his forte was n/a stuff. He is a cyl. head
wizz. I think he had a SS/C record... either track or national I dont remember. Last I spoke to him he was looking to run an Autocraft n/a engine.

Hi.
Does Ron still have Harris Engine Center, if not were can I contact him?
As for my engines.
The first one is a type 4 turbocharged engine.
Crank- standard, balanced 71mm.
Rods- standard, lightened and balanced.
Pistons- 95mm KS with KS rings.

Heads- highley modified Type4 with 44mm in and 38mm exh valves.
Turbo- Garrett TO4 with custom turbine and comp. wheels
Carb- 750 cfm Holly vac. sec. draugh trough, on custom intake and exhaust manifolds.
Power- 325 Kw at 2 bar boost.
Have not raced at that boost, as I used street tyres in the class that I was in. Ran a best of 12.02 @192.8 Km/h at 1.2 bar (with lots of traction
problems).
The second engine comes from my streetcar and is a 2714cc type4.
Crank- 80mm Scat forged+ counterweighted
Flywheel- 12Lbs.
Rods- Carrillo, 2" bigends.

Nope, no markete for it out here, so you wont be needing those terribly fuel inefficient engines you just mentioned..... I'll be round to pick them
up later....... lol
It'd be great to see a dinkum vw drag car over here again.

Nice try Doug!!!!
Hermann, the scene is a little thin on the ground but most the drag racing in Perth can be found at the "Quit Motorplex" down in Kwinana.
http://www.motorplex.com.au/
As for Drag VW's...There have been a few over the year, but mostly fast'ish street cars. My brother and myself are the only semi regular guys out
here. I run a very mild 1776 streeter that has managed a best of 14.8 and my brothers RS Subi powered Notch has done a 13 flat with absolutely no
traction on street tyres! Both of these cars run beefed standard ratio transaxles and full street trim.
There are a couple of fast street dubs that I have seen on the street, but as yet I haven't seen them at the drags.
We had Rons Bug at the "Free'n'Easy" #3 down in Freo, when he fired it up the crowd did a collective 'ohmygawd'...What a sound!
I wonder what Dave Butler has donw with PK's old cabin charger!!!? i have a suitable engine and car over here!!!
As for a suitable car for your engines Hermann...Drop me a email...We should talk!

Simon, Henry Spicak now owns the cabin blower, but on my 1775cc engine it ran 10.65 @ 127 in a 1750lb bug, using 28psi boost. These days you can get
much more efficient blowers than that old fossil. Probably lighter too! I put about 275 runs on that thing over 10 years. Keegan prob put that many on
it too! It had a 1948 build date !
I spoke to Henry and he said that he wants to sell that blower. He goes by HS618 on the forum.

71superbug you are way off there that is mike's drag bug i lifted this off his website
CBB Racing's Cranky One breaks the 10 second barrier!
A 1956 Beetle powered by a twin supercharged Volkswagen 2.1 litre engine broke into the 9s.
In the final round of the AutoSalon DragCombat (29/5/2004) Crany One showed where CBB Racing is heading. Sporting the new 2.1 litre twin supercharged
engine Mike raced in the Pro-Race category (Heads up racing with the likes of Rocco and Khoury Bros.).
First Run: - straight off the trailer (not even dynoed yet) 9.814sec @ 139.59mph(224.65kph)
Second Run: 10.168sec @ 139.63mph(224.72kph)
Third Run: 9.685sec @ 138.47mph(222.85kph)
Final Run: 9.861sec @ 142.25mph(228.93kph)

Hey Dave, what you upto these days....You finish your car?
Being as I'm in WA, I don't get to hear to much about the other coast drag activities!!!
I was chatting to Dave Prior (he and Aaaron are my only contact with East Oz) a few months back and he didn't have any news.
I'd love to get some of you drag pro's ova here for some track time on one of the best strips in the world!!!
So we have one real drag car (Rons), one car in the making (Hermanns) and some streeters....Anyone going to "DRAGCOMBAT" 2day?

Simon, you may have heard I crashed my tube chassis car in November '03.Hang on, it was Nov '02!...Time flys! After contemplating retirement, I have
decided to resurrect my old pan-car , but normally aspirated. The end of June is D-day, & I hope to run in the elevens. Blowers have been sold to
other drag racers....top secret! But anyway, pan car is ready to run, just need some new tyres. Could race it today if I had the spare bread.

I didn't know Dave....Sorry to hear it!
Did you come out ok?
No thoughts about doing it all again then...
I'd love to buy the blower, and build up an old skool car for the nostalga drags!
The scene is gettin huge ova here!
I heard a rumour that Ron is looking to sell his car....May have to hook him up with Hermann....He just bought my street car (the one in the avatar),
for his 200hp TIV donk. Should be a nice streeter that!
Unfortunately building a drag car is pipe dreams for me....My streeters keep me busy enough. Say high to Henry for me...he might remember me....I took
that pic of he's oval and Dave's oval at Oran Park back in 1990, when you were still running the 1776! Got some cool shots of you working on it also
I think!
Anyway, take it EZ.
PS: you still doing head work?

Thanks for your concern Simon.
Yes I came out of the crash OK with some bruses and a sore
knee and the crotch strap gave my gonads a good squeeze
but they didn't pop or split.
I really lost enthusiasm there for a while but this forum has
helped with the therapy and right now I am as keen as ever!
Plus all my dragracing friends over here on the east coast
have been spuring me on.
After hitting the wall the first time the car went through the
traps backwards at 134mph before backing into the wall
again.I may still rebuild after I run the old car again normally
aspirated.
I would love to see some of your photos and news of Ron Messina and Herrman.
I still do my own head work, but as for others, those CNC
type 044s are much better HP per dollar for most people.
The wedge ports in particular should be good for twelves
in just about any bug with 2200cc and IDAs.
All of the head work that I do is under the guidance of Craig
Brown at work...he is the guru, but just doesnt have the
time to do much VW work any more.
