choke


check the electric choke by taking of the air cleaner and see if it shut whwn coldd and poen when hot

Sounds like it is "overchoked" that is, the mixture is too rich (too much fuel/not enough air) when the choke is on. Can't help with fixing it, not being familiar with beetle carbies.

I'd agree - black smoke suggests a bit rich. Remove the air cleaner and adjust the body of the electric choke (after loosening three screws,) until the choke is open by about 1-1.5mm when cold. Switch the engine on and watch that the choke opens smoothly.
