12A Mazda Rotary Conversion

I've just read a web page on a Mazda rotary conversion for a beetle. http://www.geocities.com/zenjoe/VW.html

Reading this article has inspired me to possible have a go myself! Ive found out that a conversion kit for a 12A is approx $450, a used 12A rotary ranges from about $800 to $2500, and you would need a carby (already got a DRLA 45), and a custom made exhaust!

Has anyone got any experience of this conversion. Also does anyone know whats involved in getting an engine conversion passed in NSW? I guess you need an engineers report etc, but there are so many old Mazda's getting 13B's etc surely it must be possible.

Thanks

Steve,

Legally speaking the 12A is considered a 2400cc. They multiply the size by 2 for rotaries. To legally use a naturally aspirated 2.4L engine your car needs to weigh 800kg+. This should be relatively easy to prove. There are many respectable books that say weights of 800+. My rego papers say my car weighs 920kg.

Good luck with the conversion by the way. Just use a nice muffler and keep it a little quiet to get the suprise attack working ;)

You will need an engineer's certificate to get it registered. I read in a recent (non-VW) mag that NSW has the same self-certification limit as W.A. - up to 25% increase in capacity. If you want to have it road registered, I'd speak to an engineer and calculate the real costs before going too far - it will probably require some pretty major mods to make it legal. Anyway, what have you got against air-cooled? Not cool enough?

The self certification limit is actually 15%. Check this link for more details
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/vsi06.pdf
Take note of the safety upgrades required for such a conversion.

So you legally have to get a 1915 vw motor blue plated, cos it is 20.8% bigger than standard. My 1915 is blue plated.

Rhys, you won't get any boost unless it's turbo-charged :P

The Wankel Rotary Engine (built by Mazda under licence from VW, who hold the patents, but have never produced one!) is a two cycle rotary engine. Instead of pistons, it has roughly triangular rotors which spin around an epicylclic gear onto the drive shaft. They were popular for their power output and their ability to rev high (allowing higher top speeds without changing the diff ratio.)

Hope that helps a little.

a rotary is a different type of engine rhys it has no valves like normal engines its more like a 2 stroke engine as it uses ports instead of valves. they rev like crazy up to 10,000 rpm use lots of petrol

one thing to pay special attention to is cooling I bought a 68 bug that had run a 12 a and the guy had no end of trouble trying to keep it cool

rotary conversion

I have a mazda truck with a 13b extended port in it and I can say from experience that cooling is DEFINATELY, the major problem,I have to run a radiator with a 4 core for a statesman, plus two electric fans, also you could run into problems with the centreline to sump dimension , the rotary may hang a bit lower.
The next thing is that they are NOT 2 cycle as previously stated by autosilk they run the full four stroke cycle it just takes place within 2/3 rotation of the eccentric shaft or (crank)

Nathan, as you know I was there at stockton, I saw that buggy, and I definitely didn't see it lift its front wheels. Even when he gave it full throttle half way up a steep dune and threw sand everywhere it was stable and didn't lift the front. :)

Oh, and I have a modified Bus trans with custom axles, mounts and Bus CV's. So I'm ok then :P

PS: I know your supasports didn't have a bus trans, so what car of yours does?

I'd like to add a few comments to Speedbuggys. First up the P76 is 4.4lt not 3.5, the early Range Rovers ran 3.5 then went to 3.9 and then bigger. So is it a Rover 3.5, Buick 3.5 (Old Skylark engine) or Leyland 4.4 ;) Anyway, I'm just getting picky. The Bus tranny will last in a bug no problem and is mounting really that much of a pain heaps of the guys have done it now. As for lifting wheels, my Camper would lift the front wheels with a 230hp P76 motor and 1600 bus transaxle but not with the 2.0lt box and defiantley not with the Albins Box as the ratios were taller still, the lift was changing hard from 1st to 2nd across the crown of the road at intersections. A P76 engine in a bug with a standard 1600 bus box should easily pick up the front although maybe with less weight it will just accelerate and not lift!!

Cheers
