a 1916 or flat 6 porsche motor
hi there ,
well i am trying to decide on which motor to go with a vw 1916 or a porsche flat 6 ,i want my 65 bus to really go ,i am fitting commodore discs all
round to help with the stopping side of things, But i have concerns about reliability with both engines ,the car will be used often, not everyday but
often. i dont really know all that much about the output of power both these engines offer ,i want something that will not have to labour up a big
hill or a very big hill and still remain reliable even when it is hot .
i know its a porsche motor and not vw but this is the way i am leaning towards at the moment, has anyone got any experience with both these motors in
a kombi? if so any info would be appreciated thanks.

How are you going to put the flat 6 in?
Have you measured it up?
Do you have one?
Mate - that is a BIG difference in doing. One is bolt on the other is open heart surgery!
Go with the 1916. Or a 2007. A 78 crank with 90.5 barrels. The extra torque will be nice.
Really dont think you need more than a good 1776 or a 1916 though.
That Porsche would be a NIGHTMARE!

supercharge with suck through carby.
look at this thread: www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=442
2007 displacement would be sweet and still cheaper than porsche
here's some porsche conversions:www.vintagebus.com/cgi-bin/gallery-search.cgi?string=911

Seriously think about a Type 4 motor. You put a 2L T4 in there it is stock and would really give a splitty some mumbo! :bounce
It is sort of Porsche - same-ish block as a 914 and 912E.
Whack a Porsche fan kit on and a set of 44 Webers and you will need all the stopping power you can find :o
If you want MORE power put some 103mm jugs in there instead of the stock 94's and you get 2.3L !
I would still consider a WELL built 1776 first off though.

yeah a porsche flat 6 is an absolute headache as it wont bolt up to the splitty tranny. Have you considered an IRS conversion? this uses the late
style IRS beetle tranny.
A good option is a type 4, as they were designed to push a bus, you only need minor mods otherwise its bolt in. Its been done many times before and
its easy.
Just price up a flat 6 rebuild and u will see its a lot easier and cheaper to build a hot type 4

I drive a '76 twin cab a few years ago with a 2.7 flat 6 Porsche engine in it. It had the standard 2 ltr gear box. You had to rev the tits off it
to get it to go hard, Had no torque to move a heavy car,
Just didn't feel right in a Kombi.
The owner pulled the engine out and sold it, and fitted a 2ltr T4 engine again.
I have a 2007 T1 engine in my splitty at the moment and it has more than enough power. A well thought out 1776 would be quiet enough, and bolts right
in with no mods to the van.
You would need to do something with the gearbox, an IRS conversion or if you still want to use the reduction boxes, a 3.88 ring and pinion conversion.

And please dont use the Commodore discs It would be a shame to have to put hsv rims on such a cool car.A 1800 or a 2 ltr is heaps of grunt in a splity
with a swap bar of course. But dude hang on.
