Face the subs towards the rear - if you can sit them almost up against the rear of the car - firing up at about 45 degrees youll get the most bass.
What subs are they?
Are you making the box yourself?
61/2 whats? Splits? Two ways? Three ways? What brand?
What sized mid bass? What brand?
What head unit are you using? What amp/s?
DETAILS!! lol

Most important detail which will determine where you can put the sub's is how much volume do you need to use for each sub (this can be found out
either in the documentation or fom the shop you bought them from.)
Sub's tend to sound best placed at the rear of kombi's perhaps sitting above the engine depending on the size of the box

if you havent already bought the speakers and amps etc check out http://www.jaycar.com.au and check out their range.
i run jaycars 12" double magnet sub in their box with 4 jaycar 6" split speakers with a 5 channel amp in my falcon. to say the least its
awesome.
many award have also been won with their speakers here in australia.
they also show you the design of their box

6x9's and subs DO NOT MIX.
Dont even bother with them. The sub bass makes them practically pointless...

Beetle Rear Seat
I have been toying with the Idea of building a box, or converting the small area behind the rear seat to house a Sub and a couple of speaks, Does
anyone know the volume or has done this before. Its a Convertable 64-65... theres not many other options for speaker placement. any ideas would be
appreciated. |

Yeah stick with the splits.
As for the 8" personally id go a set of 6 - 6.5" three ways in the rear.
Midbass speakers really arent necessary with two huge subs and splits...
That would be my choice..
Krum - you can shove a 10" or 12" sealed box sub behind the rear seat in a bug. I have done this in several and it works well. It is a tight
fit but most sealed mid sized boxes will fit.
Im not sure of the size of that space volumetrically though sorry.
You can make up a shelf from some MDF to house a pair or two of speakers, and to also cover the sub up a bit.
EDIT--> missed that it was a convertable.
In your case Krum would you consider making mounts to place some speakers in the doors? you are going to loose alot of sound cruising with the roof
down having the speakers in the rear. The sub will be loud anyway - mine was in my convertable - but if you can - id go with speakers in the door
cards, sub in the rear.

I have got in a couple of cheepy 12" subs in the box that is under the back seat, they point forward and they do preety well for the money I paid
(esp with a bit of jungle) and splits(kenwood) up front...they make heaps of difference
Oh Its a splitty 11 window.
It is interesting that Kombis (well mine) dont seem to let much bass out, unless you open the windows...I call this the"anti-wank factor"
cheers

on the same topic i am running a sony single disk head unit with 6x9 2way explods up front and small old pioneer? splits in the rear. sounds great
and has cost me $45 total so far. wondering about fitting a pair of 6inch subs in the back without amp (i dont need it too loud, and i can by a cheap
converter to hook them to). is it worth it (id only be paying $40 for a pair of old but clean subs, and maybe $30 for the converter)?

Rhys - Alpine are good, and you cant really go wrong with name brands.
If you like the sound of them and they suit your budget, go for it!!
Baybus - in all honesty 6" subs wont do much.
They are just too small!
But if you are keen then go for it.

Second thing with sub's is they are a waste of time without an amp ( i've tried it ) I reckon the best way to get a bit of bass without an amp is some decent 6 x 9 's ( I know they aren't great
)
Rear speakers are only for fill unless you are thinking about the passengers and then if you have decent front's it shouldnt be a problem
With kombi's you have a volume problem (they are just too big) thats part of the reason the bass dosent 'come out' as much. You dontg
have that volume problem with bugs.
Midbass is a waste of time unless you are running multiple amp's and s@#t hot other gear as they are damn expensive for even basic one's
(not to be confused with 8'' subs)
My bug used to have 2 jaycar CF 10'' subs built into the back of the rear seat (that was one of my more ambitious boxes)
