Another EJ20
Gday All obviously i am new here...
OK, me and me old man are currently investigating a EJ20 Turbo motor into his 67 Splitty :thumb
I have had a look through the conversion section and also serch the site but definatly does not seem to be a common conversion (fair enough)... Any
one got any useful advice links pics ect...
Currently my main concerns for the conversion are
1. Gear Box/ We have pretty much decided to do a IRS conversion to the Kombi, but what gear box Late model Beetle or Kombi... I think Beetle is more
common as they are designed to sit in the horn things and no mod to the linkage as we dont have raise it or anything. Will a late model beetle box be
strong enough?
2. Radiator/ Now I have seen some of the Bay window conversion they have put it up front under the car, probably be looking at the same. But there
might be enough room in the rear here, esentially we are a little lost here :duh another thing will the radiator that come with the half cut we are
looking at be big enough with running extra length hose or if it ends up being tucked away some where?
3. Airconditioning/ Anyone using there conversion for this, bit a nicety really isnit  but you know no point holding out .
Right thanks in advane for any responses. Im sure there will be more questions to come as i learn more...

This is going to be a good one to follow
get hold of a type three auto . fit a extra set of cluch plates to the box .
lower it to the balls and make sure it stops and you have insurance

Not sure If I want an auto box however that is something I may consider... what are the advantages to these boxs?
One of the main reasons i want to go to IRS is the latter brakes and stuff plus Discs are a little more common for the conversion so that should help
with stoppin :thumb and it looks cool through some nice rims and when dropped.

the bus auto is very strong & better with extra cluch packs fitted other than this import a box from the usa

Ok I now know what my main hangup with this conversion is definatly the gearbox. Now I dont want the car for all out speed its a bus which aint ment
for that, its will mainly be for cruzin travelling down south up north etc, however I want the box to be strong enough for the occaisonal burn (launch
) from the lights or out of a corner perhaps a run at the drag racing
down at Kwinana one wensday evening :thumb.
Bays already have a good box so no real worries there obviously...
Beetles what do you fellas do here i guess most would be using late beetle with IRS, but what about the people with the straight axels? Do they
perservere?
Ok basically I am now reviewing the need for IRS... I know what is invlovled in the conversion, I like IRS mainly because im a little bias as i have
more of a back ground in Baja's hence gotta jack it up as high as you can no with no screwy solid axel funky stuff... but i know you can get solid
axels to ride very nicely as on the road not as much travel is required.
So any one who can fill me in on a bit of info for IRS v's Straight Axel in a Splitty that would be sweet.
Hope that rambling makes some sense... im doing a fair bit of thinking.

hey dude
i would be talking to custom offroad about this although they are using EJ22 engines instead of the EJ20T they have very good prices for
conversions!!
i think you would be better off using the single sideplate beetle gearbox as fitting the kombi 009 box would be hard work!!

Yeah thats exactly what I was beginning to think...
I cant wait to get started. We went and checked out the half cuts on Sunday, and man do you get heaps of gear for your money 
I am thinking of doing allot of the conversion myself, as i want some learning experience but yeah it can never hurt to price up kits and all the
stuff i need.
With the single side plate gearboxs they are IRS right? Dont know that much about em. I have heard they can handle some horse power. :thumb

well it seems to depend on if you want WRX or not. If not they are a $500 cheaper. and also the amount of k's on th motor. They one me and the old
man like had 50 000 k's on the clock which is stuff all they want $3800 for it but we said we dont want the gear box so we could get it for $3000
with out the box. But it come with everthing else heater cuircuits power steering pump wiring loom cumputer Its sweet. Im thinking thats not to bad
value i know you can get em a little cheaper around, but this bloke knew his subies and would be handy if i run into trouble...
I think the difference between the WRX and Non WRX is mainly in the Heads and also the WRX has a air to air intercooler correct me if im wrong... but
im thinking water to air is better for my application having not as much air flow in the rear of the car.

How are you hold all that power in the back of the van? They're not super stiff.

Also, from what i understand, the early liberty RS turboes had some head issues. Be worth finding this out for sure.

Yeah iv been thinking about that. I relise the Kombi aint really suited to 200 horsies hehe...
I was thinking while I do the IRS conversion to weld in some tube bracing, similar to what you fellas are doing with the buggies baja and even the
bugs for that matter. Weight really isnt an issue as i will have plenty of horse power to play with plus Kombis arnt the lightest in the world.
I am a little surprised this conversion hasnt been more common i was thinking id be swimming in info :P
I will check that head issue with the Subaru experts :thumb
50000ks should still be under new car warrenty shouldntit

Nah not keen on the mid mount... thats going a little too far for me.
So back onto boxs. Pretty much decided on a Late Model Beetle. I reckon this should do the job for what i want the car to do. Any one know of a good
one in Perth?
Whats your opinions on buy a beefed up reconditioned one or is worth beefing up your self. Im assuming the latter would give me some good experience,
Im also guessing some specalised tools are required.

jak rizzo is running an ej20t in the back of his bug on a stock ssp box.
he does track races and everything. seems to be holding up fine for him.
if you dont plan on extracting more power then why not just go a stocker ssp box until it brakes?

no seagull. i probably will not run the stock ssp box...
i might do if budget comes to a halt though.
reason for me not running a stock ssp box is that i am going to be spending a lot of dosh on my conversion and i only want it off the road once..so
that when i get it on the road it is exactly how i want it and can learn to drive it accordingly.
although he may not want to extract more power from his ej20t.
but i know i will be trying for more from my 13bt. that is why i am going to the bigger box. if i wasnt i would drive with the ssp box stocker.

Like all people do...figures have been thrown around willy nilly about my engine. I have been told, and do not think 200kw at the wheels is at all
unrealistic.....That said, I have a strong ssp, and have not thought about gearbox choice since I put it in.
Craig.....are you flirting with us again...and how did you know I am wearing pink undies(its actually a pink lace G).
Anthony, you know except for purpose built drag racing, there is a point where, as hp increases your ability to drive that car as hard decreases and
you actually do not get the opportunity to beat up on your box as easily.

Im thinking stock box for now till stuff goes wrong :thumb nothing like unexpected gear box failure. Thats ok as a ride a 2-stroke road motor bike...
never know when they are boing to go bang, and it is pretty much inevitable :duh so im used to a little unreliability...
Ok so whats a L Bug Box worth, second hand in good working order... ie no dropping out of gears etc? Time to start collecting bit, will chase some up
this Saturday.
Antoher question what IRS kits people reccomend for the bus. I like the creative engineering ones they also seem resonably priced. I prefer these to
the other bolt on kits they seem a little dodgy to me. Or DIY, can you just get like a T3 Rear and retro fit into Kombi.

Without knowing prices, Indian Automotive make a great IRS kit for splits, Custom Bugs& Buses make one that is almost identical, and there is also
Custom offroad. All of these places are in OZ and many people off the forum have used them. I don't know CBB, but I do know Indian well and have had
good dealings with Custom Offroad. I'd start by talking to these guys.

Imagine have 200 hp in a splitty ... <scarey>
So who is good supplier (ie Good but well priced) supplier a L Bug Transaxels with a beefed up diff and the welded 3rd and 4th in Aussie land?? What
should i expect to layout for one of these.
Also any one got any DIY information for doing the above? I like getting me hands dirty.
