bodgy subi temp sender?

since my defensive driving course my car, according to my temp guage is getting hotter and hotter, where it used to sit on about 100deg to work, sat on 125 yesterday and 135 today, rad definitely doesnt seem any hotter then previously, so i am thinking my temp sender is on its way out, either that or the guage. is this a logical assumption, or could a partially blocked rad heat the engine up more without boiling over (only other time it has been up over 130 was a couple of weeks ago and it boiled)?
