Leaky Kombi What do you do??
So does anyone have a leak free Kombi? I've tried everything I can to stop mine leaking in the rain, but still it comes in!!
I've narrowed it down to a little weap on each 1/4 window (I have 6  ) and the front doors also leak.
All that after an full resto and all new rubbers (WCM).
Very frustrating

tell me about it i have fully restored a splitty and i have safari windows and boy do they leak, i have heard the pommy rubbers for safaris are the
best the wcm ones are crap.

My Kombi stays basically dry (unless I leave the roof vent open just before show judging) but my old Beetle used to fill with water in the rain. One
rainy trip back from Canberra to Sydney I had about 5cm sloshing around on the floor...
Anyway. Try adjusting your door lock plates on the body inwards a fraction, so the doors close fractionally tighter. Test the seal with a garden hose
- sit inside while someone sprays around the door seals. You'll soon see where it leaks.
Kombi vent windows are a bugger. Mine is an Aussie '74 so I only have the two on the right rear and one on the sliding door. They ALL rust. New
rubbers are good, but they must be properly fitted back on the (rustproofed) steel frames, and the vent window assembly properly installed in the
window. They MUST go in first without the main glass and rubber being there - there is just no way to get them seated properly otherwise.
Leaking Kombi windscreens are common. If it still leaks with new rubbers, your glass is probably not centred exactly. I took about 5 installs before I
was happy with mine. It's a bugger of a job.

I have just had mine painted and the screen is leaking, it was installed by an EXPERT, I have started to worry about anyone who uses this mantle.
I have sat in the front of the van and watched for any water comming in, I have found three other places.
1. behind one of the blinker pods
2. the seams on the headlight buckets
3. rubber washer perished where the winscreen washer shaft comes through the body
I have sealed the blinker pod with non acetic, caravan window sealant, it is white will not attack my paint and you can paint over it, and it
dosent harden.
I used the same stuff on the headlight bucket, I did this inside the bucket (outside the van) so it keeps the inside part of the seam dry, dont
want it to get water in the seam or it will rust!
I got some black rubber tap washers for the wiper arms, had to cut them down a size, but they fit and look OK!
All I have to do now is get the screen sorted out! :thumb

the design of the screen rubber seems to be flawed in the way it mates with the body apeture, it seems to be very easy for water to get in under the
rubber, especially across the top, then it works it's way down, mine is now only leaking a very little bit after putting in a lot of sealant,
another big problem is the huge amount of water that is collected on the roof & runs down the gutters directly on to the corners of the windscreen
rubber, to negate this somewhat I ran a bead of silicone across from the end of the gutter & acroos the rubber to divert most of the water to the
windscreen rather than running down the pillar/rubber seal, the mesh sunvisor hides it & it did work, the rear opening 1/4vents are an absolute
disaster , all I have figured out so far is to buy a dentist's suction pump that runs on 12 volts & run piping to the bottm of each vent to
suck the water out as it comes in, the only thing that has stopped me is that I I can't work out hoe toset it up for the sliding door |

I've found the drought to be very effective in stopping water getting into my kombi!
But for when it does rain, tightening up the front door lock plates stopped water coming in the doors. Haven't had any particular problems
elsewhere. The windscreen is cracked but doesn't leak so I've loath to replace it.

yeah the drought has also helped with my leakage problems. altogh the only time i get any leaks is when i slow down suddenly and get a cooling dribble
on my feet.

Hey Phil74Camper,
As I have all new rubbers the seal around the edges of the doors and the pressure from the lock plate seem OK and don't leak (I really need to
slam all doors to shut them).
When I re-installed all the windows I tried them without sealant, but some weaped a bit in heavy rain, so I have since used a good non setting window
sealant which has stoped all leaking from the fixed windows.
My problems are all the moving windows. To the best of my ability I have installed the 1/4 windows properly but most of them weap right at the pivot
point, which then seems to run down the edge of the rubber and comes out in all sorts of strange places. I have tried a number of soft foams and
rubber flaps to help the problem, but with the recent heavy rain has caused leaks again.
The worst is the winding window in the front doors. Water just poors in past the scrapers (just pull a side panel and plastic off in the rain one
day). Even though I have attached new plastic the water still gets in past all the little holes not covered by the plastic and the sliding vent at the
back of the door.
When I restored it I hoped to have a car for life, but I my need to reduce my expectations!!
Frustrated!!!

the scrapers weren't designed to hold all water out. that's why you have drain holes at the bottom of the doors. keep them clear and there
should be no problems.
i replaced the vents with one piece glass. it doesn't leak a drop. gets hot though. 
anybody know how the sliding windows hold up to the weather?

I thought it about time I found out what all the hooha was on this site and so here I am.
My Kombi leaks from the quarters also. I just live with it after all it doesn't rain all that much. But for some reason the car stinks really
bad afterwards.

Heh Heh I just ordered new safari window body and glass rubbers from creative engineering, I hope these work I could have siliconed the wcm ones, but
thats not how it should be, if these leak I'll use a sealant if they still leak then?????????????? :cry

G'day Thook, great to see you on the other side!! It's a bit funny to think of you as a 'learner dubber' though
I just can't bare to see water getting in poor Andy.
BUS914, I couldn't do without the 1/4 vents. Good tinting and 6 1/4 vents slightly open means I can drive in 40 deg heat.
The leaking in the back just means I'm not to keen to fit the insulation and new side panels I have yet. Maybe I just seal it all and drill holes
at the botom to let the water out?
I know the scrapers wern't meant to keep all the water out, but with the volume flowing through mine, there's always some that makes it into
the bus.

I did the same on the rear body glass as others. I removed the quarter opening glass vents and put one piece glass in all back windows.
The front door outer scrapers obviousley were never able to keep all water out, as the original plastic dust cover for the front doors has a second
flap joined to it to direct water off the main dust cover and directly in to the channel/ lower beam in the door at wheel arch level.
