rabbit engine in typ3 / how to set timing

Hi there,

as I have my engine (1.8 rabbit) installed,I wonder how to set the
timing,as there is no timing mark on the flywheel.I have an adapter plate and custom flywheel so I can use the org. type3 starter.Ignition is from a scirocco (TSZ-h and DLS,sorry, I don´t know the american name for it).Can a mark be made on the pulley?Any help would be great.

Timing marks are usually at the other end of the engine ;)

on a golf they are at the fly wheel end, just remark it using the positive stop method.
A spark plug with the centre removed , drilled and tapped to screw some stud through, turn engine till N0# 1 piston just touches the stop then mark ,turn engine the other way till it just touches and re-mark, half way between these 2 marks is TDC..

@VWCOOL: I know both sides of an engine...

@jakjones: I have set the timing to TDC at the moment, idles ok (I do it similar way, with a screwdriver).Problem is that even if I had timing marks on the flywheel,I could´t use them because the type3 trans has no hole like the golf trans to see the marks and use the strobe. And I didn´t want to make a hole to the trans. So I want to use the pulley instead. My question is:when you want a mark for e.g. 30 BTDC,means this simply to measure 30 degrees from the 360 (circumference of the pulley)?

on golf engines there are timing marks on the pulleys for the timing belt so you can find tdc easily
where are you located and do you have any pics?

I´m from Augsburg,Germany.I will post some pics if you are interested. The TDC mark is on the pulley, right, but I would like to be able to set the timing not only at idle speed, but to check the amount of (don´t know the f*** word: opposite of ignition retard) of the distributor at a given rpm according to the engine specs.
Sorry for this long sentence,I guess it´s typical German complicated thinking.Normally,on the flywheel there are two marks, one for TDC and the other mark (which I would like to have on the pulley) for the ignition (***see above).

buy a strobe light with an advance Dial , Snap On make one.
you can check the total advance that way easily.

Measure pulley diameter , work out the circumferance , etc etc
