Hi Neil,
I only run 20/50 oil, Valvoline or Mobil, whatevers on special, I wouldn't run anything thinner than this in a motor that has some k's on it, before I got my car finished I spoke to a few mechanics that have had experince with subaru engines, they said that it was a popular misconception that u had to run thin synthetic oil in Subaru engines, they all had wrx engines with big end bearing failure on their workshop floors which they blamed on running too thin an oil.
Just some food for thought.
I'm sure that there will be some others that have different opinions/experiences. My motor seems to love it, beautifully quiet, stays cool & hasn't skipped a beat (so far).
regards

Bingo!,

I have spoken to a few mechanics also, subaru recommend 10/30 for cars even with the higher K's. The subarus experience wear and can be noisy when cold thus the 10/30. Jak's guy said that he has had bearing failures and thats why the 20/50. I went back to the guy I know who had just spent 2 hours on the phone with the mobil tech asking the differences between the oils and why he should not stock Catrol in his workshop. He has a GTR with 309kw at the wheels and was also concerned about engine choice.
You only need the thicker oil, and get the big end failures when the engine is constantly pulling high revvs. I wont be revving mine past 6500 and want to minimise top end wear/noise, therefore have a 10/30 or a 15/40 as a second option.
Jak revvs his to 8 or 9000 daily racing all those hotted up cars on the central coast, so it makes sense for him to use a 20/50.

Wow.
Thats interesting stuff.
I run Mobil 1. Think its 5 or 10 weight.
The Subaru people tell u that because of all the small orifices in the engine, like the lifters and cams. If u dont run real fine oil, when cold the lifters and such wont get oiled properly .
The engine seemed to be a bit more noisy when i changed from organic to synthetic. But ive been running Mobil1 for ages now. No probs.

Hi Choppa,
Are u Simons brother? the one with the legendary red notch? If so, I just wanted to thank u for letting Simon send me detailed pics of your conversion, although it differed from mine a little it was very inspiring, also Simon spent alot of time answering my stupid questions over the email.
Whats the quickest 1/4 mile that u have run?
