Electric windscreen washer

I have a '68 Bug and I would like to replace the spare tyre air powered washer bottle with a electric item.
It needs to be compact and I don't wish to drill any holes!

Has a/one got some ideas on what type and where to mount?

Thoughts and pics would be greatly appreciated!

how about keeping the bottle and just adding a universal washer pump in to the line below the bottle. then wiring a switch to it in the dash some where. im actually in the process of putting a micro switch in the wiper switch assy in the steering column. must get on to that again.

see Dasdubbers build-up in "members rides" he has an electric system from the US. It mounts on the inside of one of the front mudgaurd bolts. looks pretty good.

I'm sure I have other pictures but can't find them right now - but you can see the aforementioned reservoir on the side of the tank area - very simple easy installation (5-10mins) then a bit of wiring and voila.

It is from CB Performance:

They have gone up a lot in cost since I bought one....but at least another option for you to consider.

Don't want to be mean, but I haven't actually seen an original beetle washer system! The 71 I owned years ago had an aftermarket setup in it (which I thought was standard), and the 69 I have now has the same system in it. It consists of a bottle mounted centrally just in front of the upright waxboard cover over the wiring in the boot (make sense?), and a push button on the dash. Both cars (owned 17 years apart) had the same setup, hence I thought it was standard).

Bottle behind the spare wheel? Yikes, I'll have to have a look around and see how that fits!

The washer pumps are easy to come by. Just get one from any of the many parts stores or if you are feeling really cheap try to get one at a wrecker.

By beetle had the simple setup with the universal pump connected to the standard tank. Don't forget to bypass your steering column valve.
A springloaded toggle switch on the dash works wonders.

My van has one installed too. I'm not so hot on its setup though. Someone put a pushbutton on the right hand side of the steering column. very hard to reach. It also had a washer bag instead of a bottle which pushed against the big pointy screws of the original mount. I replaced it pretty quickly.

If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.

I really do like the CB Performance one! Looks very smooth.

I've got a few toggle switches still left over after I did my dash in s/steel, so that will be no problem!

The CB Performance item could have been designed to fit almost any US Car... a trip around the wreckers could find one similar.... a square bottle generic bottle with pump in the bottom is available from auto one/repco etc very inexpensive...
I did have one until last week when one of My dogs decided to chew the cane table it was sitting on....
after the pump unit fell off the destroyed table, the dog attacked the pump unit.... the wiring was OK, the bottle looks OK but the pump unit has dissapeared altogether....

I've just got the washer bottle including pump from the rear of an old Leone sedan- this isn't too bulky so I guess it will fit neatly somewhere in the stock location.

A lot of vans have water bladders / bags for the rear windscreen washers too, these also inlcude the pump.

But I have to say I like Leighs article modifying the stock switch to operate it

Cheers

I was thinking of doing this because the washed valve on the steering column in my 76 bay leaks! I was going to replace it with a micro switch that ran to a electric pump under the stock bottle. The bloke that wrote that article said he was going to write an article for a bay window assembly, do you have a link to it? Would save me alot of time fiddling about!

Hi

He hasn't written it yet, hes been overseas. All you really need to change from that article is how you mount the micro switch on the wiper switch. You need to remove the stock valve and make a bracket to hold the micro switch in its place.

Yea, shouldnt be too hard but would save alot of time if the article was written... anyways looks like im doing it myself. I will take some fotos and post em on here if anyone wants an idea... Anyone got some fotos of the microswitch installed already?

oh and also, how do you stop all the water flowing back into the tank because of gravity? Do the pumps not let the water flow back if they are off or do i have to go and find a one way valve sort of thing?nn[ Edited on 11-7-2005 by 76camper ]

Hi

You can fit a one way valve in the system from fish tank I suppose, I never found a problem in my bug and I tried to avoid using the washers as it made the car look messy.
