My 'new' 1964 Karman Ghia
Just thought I'd show a few pics of my latest purchase! I know I have turned over a few cars recently, however the reasons have basically been that I
have bought long distance and sight unseen, and been unprepared for the actual condition of the cars.
However with this baby I inspected before handing over the cash so I know what I'm getting myself into, so I aint selling!
Anyway, she's a 1964 with a standard 1500 single port, and no mods except for non-original paint (not that that's realy a modification. The floorpan
halves are both knackered but the rust apart from that is pretty good, and after recently finishing a welding course I think I'm reasonably well
prepared to tackle a restoration.
Mechanically, I dont really know the condition, however the plan is for a full rebuild anyway so I am prepared for the worst (with a reco 1776 in my
posession I am already someway there).
The plan of attack is to lift the body off the pan, fix the floorpan first and then deal with the rust in the main body, before stripping to bare
metal and POR15'ing the whole thing with a few coats or gunmetal grey or silver (other suggestions for colour welcomed!). Wheelwise I am thinking
either fuchs, raders or maybe empi 5's (or possibly leaving standard for the time being).
The headlining will be replaced following repainting, however the interior will just be cleaned up a bit until I can afford a new interior. I hope to
get stuck into it pretty much straight away however with renovations going on I have alot on my plate, and dont envisage it being finished for a
little while yet!

nice little coupe. a bit of work to do but it will be worth it. did you pick it up for a good price and is it a real rhd or a conversion? look forward
to seeing its progress.

The interior is pretty ratty. However I will leave this until last.
So, any suggestions for colour schemes/wheels. I'm also trying to think of a decent name (keeping in mind the colour will change..and suggestions?)

I got it for $4750..which I think is pretty good. However I can imagine the resto is going to cost me plenty, so no doubt it would be cheaper to buy
one restored. But as I dont have $15-20k I can afford to do it bit by bit, and it will be done properly and to my own tastes. Progress will likely be
very slow!
As far as I can tell the floor has the worst rust however I have told myself there'll be plenty more so I'm prepared for the worst (even though the
rest seems reasonable). It's an original RHD so it's all good there.

The body looks quite good in the photos. Once you strip the paint off you may have some surprises but then again you may not.
Looks like a good car for the money.

Oliver, it's a complete turn around to the fasty I was going to get, but I guess it was a once only opportunity to get my hands on one!.
64vwmark, the photos really do the caqr justice..there is some bubbling around the car and a few holes which I'm sure will turn ugly once I start
diving deeper, but that's what I bargained for so if it's better than that it's a bonus.
Rob, I thought about going the original blue colour which would look ok, but I am leaning towards either gunmetal grey, silver or a bronze/gunmetalish
type colour. I know I'll change my mind a thousand times before settling on one colour so I guess I shouldn't get too caught up with colours for
now.
I am also wondering if there are any kits available to make the front grilles look like an early ghia (ie 56-58 I think). I am not worried if a bit of
cutting and welding is required (even though it could be considered butchery) but I really love the grilles of the first ghias. Does anyone know if
there is something available?

Cheers Dean and Pat. I will get around to taking more pics of the rust areas (esp floor) however it's safe to say they need replacement. I forst have
to empty the boxes of bits that have been stripped before I can take the pics....I just havent had a chance as yet.
