Shipping an engine
Can anyone tell me how I can get an engine shipped from Melbourne to Sydney?
Also, how much does a short block (i.e minus ancilleries, tinwear etc) weigh?
Thanks
Steve

You could try a transport company, when I was driving for John L Pierce, sometimes there was a bit of space left over they would put small stuff on a
pallet, all you have to do is get it to their depot, and get yourself or have somebody pick it up from the depot at the other end, you will have to
pay by the pallet, unless they can stick it on a tyre or something soft, like I said it all depends on weight and availability of space, I am not sure
if they still do this, it has been ten years since I worked for them, but it is worth a try, failing this ask a frieght forwarder from any company, I
can't remember how much it was, we used to sneak stuff all the time, it may be a bit more expencive now due to the sky rocketing diesel prices at
the moment, give it a try.
Let us know how you go!

GET A QUOTE FIRST!
Steve, I've been burn't in this situation before when the orig eng of resto project surfaced & the PO sent it from Syd to Melb by just
asking TNT to just pick it up & send it. It took weeks of arguing & threats to get the price down to what it should have been. Good luck!!

I used to work for a courier company in Sydney and people asked us about shipping motors we would reply as long as it was on a pallet and clean and
pref have some type of wrapping we would transport. Most of the overnite companies do the same, but you could also try looking in the paper for
backloaders or even see your local wrecker some have a hotline and can transport parts whereever you want. But always with anything check out prices
first and then get it in writing.

Anyone got any more accurate info? Or a contact? I just got a quote which was close to what the same company quoted for a whole beetle!!! Even
though it was done through the company account, it was far more than they often charge for far more weight and cubic metres of regular stuff - maybe
they see us as mugs?

No, not a mug- just a superprofit!
I wish some of these people could grasp the concept that if they have a regular income flow from an established business, anything extra like a casual
customer should be able to be done at a lower rate because the rest of the business is meeting all their overheads. But no, where they think they can
exploit you, eg by your not getting a quote, they will charge what they think they can get away with. I got out of my predicament by getting quotes
not from the transport companies but from their more frequent customers. Try to see what your local wrecker, mechanical workshop or panel shop pays
& who they deal with. They are in the situation of shipping motors, trannies clips etc etc all the time. When a good mate in the trade (sadly
now gone to the big wrecking yard in the sky) gave me copy invoices for engine shipping at about 10% of what they tried to get out of me, they soon
gave up!
