meet my lovely fasty....
Um, hello all. Well, I'm new, so it's nice to meet you! Thought I'd take a moment to introduce my lovely old girl too. (really hope I've
attached the pic right - I'll try again if it hasn't worked!) She's a very recent purchase and we're still getting to know one another, she's a
true lady - very tempremental. She's a 1970 (thought she was a 71 before I bought her, but the VIN tells me otherwise), found on ebay, and has been
looked after by her previous owner very well indeed. She has a few custom alterations, which I'm so far unsure about whether or not I should change
back to original. I'm very much a novice so no doubt I'll be seeking heaps of advice as I start the process of doing her up (she's a great looker,
but I can see her potential to look even more so, interior needs a bit of work). It'll take a while - no doubt as everyone finds, there's a long
wish list but it'll take time to fund it! I shall apologise in advance for any ridiculously stupid questions I may end up asking and look forward to
getting to know you all. A first one is regarding the heating system - not currently working. She's got a kombi muffler fitted and apparently you
can't get the necessary elbows needed to connect the system - is that right? If it's not, does anyone know where to get such a part? And if it is,
what's the best option for getting one sorted somehow? It's freezing out here in the middle of the country - can't feel the wheel at night,
fingers go numb - need heating... Hope you all like her! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Forum!!
Love your new ride, looks hte goods. Fasties make great cars as I've also found recently!
As for the heaters, fortunately I have not chased any, but type 3 will be hard to find. Are you sure it's a kombi muffler? Type 3 ones do look
similar.
Do you still have the heat exchangers?
Best bet is to try the wreckers, or some one on the forum for parts. New if avaialble for a type 3 will be expensive!!
Alternatively Beetle heat exchangers will fit, but the muffler will not work. Type 3 mufflers had a single outlet in the middle which slopes off to
one side.
If you do have a type 3 muffler, the beetle heat exchangers should bolt straight on.
I guess modifying a beetle muffler is also an option if your handy.
Also try some VW shops (try the forum sponsors), you may get lucky.
A good online resource is available at http://www.type3.org also.
Good luck!

Hello Andy, and thank you!
I had her checked out at a VW place in Perth before I bought her and the guy there said it was a kombi muffler, I'm having to take peoples words for
things at the mo - only just got my haynes manual 2 days ago, and now spending a lot of time scratching my head trying to work everything out (last
car I had that I could tinker with was a Fiat 126, and that was 10 years ago.... the picture of the muffler and heating system connection in the
manual is certainly not what's attached to my car) As far as I know everything else is still in place and working, just lacking that essential
connection. I'll have to have more of a poke. See - proper novice....... :-) |
