RE: Indicators

Hey all,

Does anyone know If it is legal to have your indicators mounted inside the front headlight assembly, using the amber bulb?

I've seen it on a few bugs here and in US mags. Anyone done this?

Thanks in advance

I believe the 'letter of the law' (ADRs) here
reads amber LENSE. However, a RWC place here could well pass it just as many apparently pass orig semaphores (which don't flash)......

People do it cos they can mount the bulb where the parking light bulb normally goes. What would you do for a front parker? (its a legal requirement too...)

Hi Rob,

Firstly let me just congratulate you on that magnificent 23 of yours. It is a credit to your skills and commitment to the restoration process. Very inspiring!
No doubt your Barndoor will be even better.

In re to the indicator. The park lights and the headlights work on the same bulb on my bug. The indicator in mounted on the bottom of the assembly inside the headlight glass.
The reason I ask is that I dont want any indicators mounted on the fender/bumper etc and thought they looked great inside the headlight.

Many modern cars have amber globes in a white/clear/black lens.

Thanks - I actually doubt the barney will look as good first time out. Can't afford it after the 23! Agonised about selling the 23 but fortunately that decision didn't really have to be made since I basically couldn't recover what I had put into it 8-).

The barney will be rust repaired, roadworthy and ugly. On the plus side my wife says that if its a rat looker she'd be happy to use it as her daily driver (she's really reluctant to drive the 23, after someone else prangs it she says).....

In relation to the indicators I should clarify (I did go through with my 23 which was a US bus and had the mixed red stop/indicators lights on the back...)

When I think about it wasn't the front inicator lense colour the engineer was worried about (front lenses are in fact clear). There couldn't be a combined front parker/indicator on one bulb on the front either. As long as there were two bulbs with separate functions that was OK (which there is on a splitty anyway).

He read me sentence and verse on the rear though and did stick by the letter of his ADR book which said amber LENSES were required on the back. Whether this turns out to be year related thing or has since changed (this was a couple of years ago now) I don't know..

There are year related requirements. Thank god I didnt have to fit windscreen washers or reversing lights
(or seatbelts but I put em in and had em engineered...)

Im glad you still have the 23 Rob. I don't think I could sell it after putting in my heart + soul in to the rebuild. I'll be emailing you about it when I win Lotto.(crossing fingers) Not many people realise how much it actually costs to rebuild a vintage vehicle(properly)

Like they say about show cars...the first dent is always the hardest!! Hee Hee. The Rat look is full of character and deff. eye candy, and one is not as paronoid to drive it too.
Thanks for all the feedback. Im going to try my luck with the indicators mounted in the headlight assembly and plead ignorance If cornered by the boys in blue!
Stay safe(!) :D

Each bulb is required to have it's own reflector is the simplified explanation I was quoted regarding this ADR. The lens also had to be marked with the correct "E" marking, now this was a rebodied vehicle were all the body etc was required to meet the new ADR's. Don't know if this applies to you? Each engineer seems to have a different view on the ADR's. It's a nightmare.

I agree with you Speed. Everyone is so unsure about whats legal and whats not.

Here in WA we depend on whether the cop that pulls you over is in a good mood or not. If not you sometimes get a Yellow(defect sticker...stuck sideways If he's having a really bad day!!!)
Then you hope that the pit inspector is having a good day too when he goes through your car. They often let alot go as old beetles are "slow" and stripped out at the factory anyways.

No offence to any cops or inspectors out there...Hee Hee Hee...Beer?

i put the blinker lights into a set of rossi headlights and they look pretty good. haven't tried to find orange bulbs yet but will one day.

Took 15 minutes but i don't have park lights any more, mind you in nearly 20 years of driving i have not used them once so what are they for actually?

Design rules relate to when a car was built aren't they.
