which VR6 are you looking at? i know the older ones put out different bhp figures all depends if it came from the golf or the corrado, the corrado being 20bhp higher from memory. not sure if the newer engines are the same. as for bad points never heard of anything really only good things said about the engines.. i know i used to have great fun in the ones i have driven :thumb

Vr6

Why do you want to know about overseas VR6 options ? There were 3 engine types . 103 kw for t4 vans 128 kw for the vr6 and 142 for the Corrado and VR6 syncro . We only got the 128kw . Australians received VR6's from 94-98 with 94 and 95 being early and 96 - 98 being late . What do you want to do to the car , mods wise ?

They've had turbo kits for them for a long time now . I've decided to get a rebuilt engine with a turbo from O/S as I dont trust machine shops here in this country with a single cylinder head V6

I used to sell them new 94-96 and they are pretty much bullet proof. Haven't had much to do with them since so I don't know how the engines fair with high k's.
The manuals were an absolute hoot and the auto was a pleasant surprise.
A pretty simple, straight-forward thing mechanically and well put together. Had no inherant problems and feel real solid with the heavier engine.
Lot of car for the money these days.
Find one with a good service history and I reckon you'd have to be pretty safe.

All you need to know.... They drink lots of fuel, and make the Mk3 handle worse than standard!!! Other than that, they sound nice with a good exhaust, and arent much quicker at all than my Mk2 up to about 100...:starhit:

Electronic throttle control ? These cars run cables , the throttle body isnt even motorised . I've never had throttle body problems ? Head cant be machined ? What planet are you from ?

If your buying one make sure the ABS works

the light should come on with the ignition and off again when started. A few places have been know n to remove the globe so your not aware of the problem, its a rather expensive unit

ABS

Its pretty much the earlier VR6's with the ABS faults . 94 95 and early 96 . Its pretty much a guaranteed failure for the early Vr6 . I could write a list a mile long on what to look out for . Just send me a u2u when you find one and I'll check it out for ya .

Speed freak

I'm planning to take the Golf out to the Salt lake for a bit of a high speed run . If I run to 140 maybe 150 mph by the end of the 1/4 in 9.5 sec I should get to about 180-190 by 15 sec , thats the theory anyway :thumb

Sh1t!!! I thought you were just teasing me... My car is good for a 15.5 1/4, apparently... (according to Tim from the tex), so a mid 7 sec 100 isnt out of the question. You really going to a salt lake?

I have owned a 98 VR6 for a couple of years and I don't have anything bad to say about it. Without mods you will find it a little sluggish off the line as compared to a 4 cyl but unless you want to race people on Saturday nights on your way to the McDonald's car park the VR6 won't disappoint.
There are however, many avenues to go down in modifying the car and it has the potential to be a very quick turbo or supercharged golf. Add some bells n whistles and for the price you pay, you'll have an awesome car.
The only modification I have made is to add a Powerchip which added 15kW to the flywheel. Not bad but it also smoothed out the acceleration, regulated the fuel economy and extended the power mostly in the mid-range.
If you want to buy a VR6 look for anything under 100k kilometres. They would be rare these days but if you can find one, grab it.
In my humble opinion, the 95 96 VR6 looks the best with its trim and wheel arches but it was a bit too old for me and the 98 was the least problematic of them all.
It's a great car and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fast golf without strap-ons

As Jim said, i've had my VR6 for a few months now. Had a fair few teething problems mainly due to having faith in the person i bought it off. The car is pretty stock and seems great now that i have ironed out the initial bugs. They are pretty bloody thirsty though but i'm in no hurry to get rid of her.

Vr6

15 kw from a chip a chip is a bold statement . I had a good chat with the engineer that worked on the 2.9l engine that came out in the corrados and syncro golfs . Basically to get from 128 to 142 kw the following was changed :

cams
intake runners
throttle body
exhaust downpipe
100cc
engine tune

So to claim the same power only via tuning is hard to beleive in a N/A LATE MODEL engine .

My VR6 made 155 KW after fitting EMS stinger 2 engine management , extractors and full exhaust , intake mods

Vr6 did not come out in 2 door . Only 1.8 CL golf was 2 door . Have yet to see a private import 2 door Vr6 or mk3 Gti
