Who coined the phrase 'Dak-Dak'? Does anyone know the specifics of its origins?

When the stuffing and perforated inside tubes collapse (as they inevitably do) the chirrup sound almost diappears, leaving just the Dakka Dakka Dak
sound of the beat.

Sorry guys, but Dak Dak has been around a lot longer than any sources mentioned... I think the first time I saw it was in an american novel penned in
the 70s.

Is it the peashooters that make that chirping sound? I only seem to hear it on the later models with 1600 motors.

yeah i think the kubel story is a bit of an urban myth. I think it is just the clattery sound of a beetle motor, just have one of the exhaust flanges
loose and u will know where dak dak came from.
the whistle created by the peashooters is unique to cheaply made brazilian peashooters. The spotweld on the perforated tube bit breaks off and it
thus reverberates in the pipe. German tailpipes don't usually break like that and dont have that chirpy whistle sound.
for the record the chirpy whistle sound is referred to as "Fweem" on the RAMVA newsgroups.

NOw how in the hell did THEY get hold of it - that stuff on Dakka dak was my original article on Fweem which I wrtoe and sent to John Henry in the USA
for his "alternate" site on fweem - about 4-5 years ago.
Amazing that it found it's way all round the world and back again.
Incidentally the quote was from a larger article with a technical description of fweem - condensed to it's essence, there are two parts to fweem
- the beat and the whistle/chirrup. The beat comes from the internal design of the muffler and the firing order which results in left left right
right pulses out the peashooters; and the whistle comes from the smallish internal diameter of the perforated inner tube in the peashooters and the
resultant high gas speed (hence the comments about the dakka dak sound when the perforated pipes rust out).

Oh my goodness an article author was amongst us
It did seem to me as a newbie that dak dak is a common world wide term for a type of engine noise.
Who started calling Aussie VW'S Dak Daks?
Was it a name that just caught on and became common use with it's starting point unknown? Some guy trying to get the right dak dak sound
happening and his mate asking how the dak dak was going? |

Even had my window down the other day when caught in city traffic trouble was that the little fence posts along the median strip were making a swish

Already doing it 
I have "V-Vision" which incorporates looking AND listening for V Dubs - if you hear it but don't see it, its a "Ghost dub"
It gets really confusing at VW events though - you have to turn off the V-Vision, or you get a sore neck from turning around all the time hehehhe

Yes Jen, I am 'out there', and cool pic!! (I have seen it
before though in a magazine.)
As for the chirping sound (I call em 'crickets' - go bug-power!), our 1500 SP does it also. It seems to be almost directly related to
vacuum, or maybe timing advance?
