Perth VW Specialists

Hi everyone,

I've just registered on this forum (having been in lurk mode off and on for a while). I'm in the assessment/headscratching/decision making stage of a restoration project on a '63 beetle. I've no doubt I'll have plenty of need to call upon the knowledge and experience here but, for the time being, I've only a couple of queries.

First off, an engine rebuild is going to be required. Does anyone know of a Perth (or at least WA) company who do quality machine work on the VW lump?

Second, I've only found a couple of crispy ad/or bent bits in the bodywork. As an ex Pom I'm amazed by the soundness of the body. I spent much of my youth working on stuff half the age which had often ceased to exist from the windows down. Hooray for the WA climate. Does anyone (ideally in Perth again but Australia wide is OK) sell repair panels for (i) front quarter panel, (ii) lower door hinge pillar, (iii) rear quarter panel?

Thanks in advance. Like I said, I expect to be picking everyones brains on a regular basis so all suggestions gratefully received.

Well, don't all talk at once...

Welcome to Oz! Land of the Rust Free, Home Of The... Um..
Sorry I dunno about Perth but there are several bizs on the East Coast that would be able to mail order small bits: Vintage VW Supplies in Sydney, Mick Motors in Brisbane... etc

Depending on what you are after you could try either

Volkswest on albany hwy in Kenwick
94592313
Bill or Chris there have Many Many parts both new and s/h. They do a lot of machining themselves and all the engines i have had done there (3 myself and 6 if you count my father and bro) have done good miles being driven hard. Chris is also factory trained on bugs etc so is good at the fiddly things.

For performance type stuff try vee dub repairs and spares in fremantle. Kurt has done some wicked things with his own cars. (currently a gold supercharged watercooled superbug) Kurt can tune / balance dual carbs etc and has a Lot of knowledge on how to make VW's go fast.

North of the river i dunno as i have never lived there.

Volkswest can supply all your rust panels etc or may have a donor car you can mutilate.

I do know of a place north of the river, but having had work done there, I wouldn't recommend them. They carry a few parts which is handy, but I wouldn't trust them to work on my VW again! Kurt is very good, I haven't tried Volkswest, but I've heard good things and there's another VW place in freo I can't remember the name of who did excellent and cheap work on my suspension. There's another VW specialist in Rocko that has a very good rep, but I found his prices much too high.

Thanks for the replies folks. I spent Friday doing a bit of a tour of the VW specialists. Didn't get down to Freo, sadly, but VolksWest certainly gave an excellent impression of knowledge and enthusiasm. Were more than happy to answer daft questions from someone who made it clear he wasn't actually spending any money on this occasion. I work not far from them too so I suspect they might be seeing quite a lot of my hard earned before long. Do they hold the record for the largest collection of rough but saveable Country Buggies in WA? I WANT ONE.

I suspect that the NOR joint I visited may have been the one mentioned by 70AutoStik. However, I make a policy of allowing my vehicles into the hands of "professionals" as infrequently as possible (if you've been unimpressed by car joints you should see some of the horrors masquerading as servicing and repairs at $75 an hour that I've seen perpetrated by motorcycle shops) so I'm not too concerned about general repair and mechanicking standards.

NOR or SOR isn't terribly important to me though as I live in the Hills miles from anywhere much anyway ;).
