you all sound like the kids at my school debating whos dads SS commodore is better!!!

Id put a subie motor in a dub if i wanted something quiet and powerfull but im still young and stupid and love the noise of an Aircooled motor with massive carbs or throttle bodies. Fair enough VW motors need alot of money put into them other wise they arent worth pissing on, we all know that but we have all spent silly money on our VWs... right???

Pete, Stan just quoted me $3500 to rebuild my engine. Needs a new case Kombi's too heavy that was what finally got me to jump off the the fence and get serious about a suby. Oh cost of the case about a grand.

How big is the current one? Is it type 1 or type 4?

I love this forum and everyone on it. A boring rainy Monday, shunt into the realms of the most classic of classic arguments. All we need is a few comments from the stroker boys regarding the cost and power of a 1916 and our Tuesday will be in full swing. Imagine how pointless and boring our existance would be if we all agreed!!!!

Lets organise a game of skirmish so we can shoot each other while arguing who has the best gun.

Jak..... do you have a passenger door? How is the exhaust leak?

Well if your really bored I could always start an arguement about how turbos suck (no pun intended) and how you should pull the turbo off the EJ20T and supercharge it instead. It would be as pointless as every other arguement but you'd get some passionate replies I'm sure.

Jak, everyone knows the subaru engine is better than the VW engine, with so much technology it's a no brainer. Anyone saying anything else is just trying to justify to themselves why they still have a VW motor. As convincing as they seem to themselves, they also know deep inside that they can't fool themselves.

Yep, I reckon EFI engine conversions are great. Hell, I like late-model transplants so much that I invented the word 'retrotech'.

But for the 'argument', it ain't VW any more :( and they CAN'T be done for $800 like some would have you believe.nn[ Edited on 27-9-2005 by VWCOOL ]

No worries Wes, I'm not on here telling people that my car / conversion is better than anyone elses, just like u won't find me outside the conversion section of the forum singing the Subaru bible (is there such a thing?), it's not for everyone, but it is for me.

Results? :duh

As evidenced here:
http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=41625&page=1#pid383787

and here

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=41775&page=1#pid385588

and to a lesser extent, here:

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=36884&page=8

...the Type 3/WRX conversion that I was involved in (GTMac's) was on the road and running in July. As I shared here on AVD, the conversion took two days for two blokes (not including the radiator install which had been done previously by GTMac) I drove the car for around 150km sorting out various things before handing it back to GTMac, the owner.

Yes, there have been teething problems, but many of those have been related to the VW components (clutch cable etc), not the conversion itself.

The car is still waiting for a set of my big vented front disc brakes (a requirement for rego - if the engine donor car has vented brakes, so must the recipient car) before being presented for its engineer's certificate. But as it is a 'toy' and not a daily driver, there's no great rush.

Depsite the fact the Faaaaastback is not yet 'engineered', it is driveable and has shocked a few 'fully sick' WRX and 200SX owners during a few brief 'test' sojourns around Sydney's Western Suburbs.

With around 200kW from the upgraded WRX engine versus maybe 40kW from the stock 1600 and standard 165 tyres and stock brakes, forgive us for not driving it further yet.

I reckon that, as you so eloquently tagged it :puke is a "result"... How's your car running and handling, JVL? Do tell!

ANNNNYYHOW....
Jak, have you discovered what the noise/damage/whatever is yet? What can Macca and I look forward to when he takes it to Wakefield??!!

Hi Glenn,
I've been driving the car all today as I need it for work & the bloody noise comes & goes. Pretty definant apon start up (when I say definant, u can't hear it from inside the car)then pratically disappears once up to temp. I went & saw the Scott again today that is going to rebuild it to arrange a time, he now thinks that it may be piston related, which would be better than big end related I would think. The worst thing is that the car still drives so beautifully & that I had to ignore the M3 driver that sat up my culu for 10ks just trying to get a reaction. He clearly had other lanes to overtake but he wanted to play. Sadly i could not teach him a lesson today.

I think if Andrew changes gear at 6000rpm like I do, don't do 15 minute stints, just 3 hot laps at a time he will be fine. I'm going back to a standard L-bug box for the 3.88rp so that I don't have to hold it just off the limitor at 7000rpm down Eastern Creek Straight.

Hope he's changed the cheese cutters! With those driving lights on the front its the perfect sleeper! I really like it.
regards
Jak

Thats me...innocent and cute!

I need to move up the coast or out west where the amount of fully sick cars is significantly greater than round here. Looking looking although nothing worth talking about....Jak however slowly putts to drop his boy to school and pick up some milk and has 3 races with worthy contenders.

Put my lap top in tonight....its a mini laptop and I have disconnected the screen so it folds back on itself and wired in the car...looks like a dvd player, although I have all the microtech gauges on the screen....looks cool and slides away under the dash in the brackets I made.

No leaks from the new sump I made either....might stop smelling like an old 1500 now.

Jak,
Sounds like piston slap to me, in the UK there was a big problem with MY98 engines from this and your symptoms sound very familiar! It was all do do with the piston skirt design which they shortened at the same time as a new low friction coating but the skirts didn't guide the piston well enough until the temperatures/expansion had stabilised.

Got any pics of this one Matt? How did you shorten the pick up tube? I'd MIG weld it but for some reason I'm worried about leaks..

I cut the pick up tube and had my plumber flange one side then braize the two together. Worked a treat.

I had a mate with a turbo Vortex. 450,000km on it - until the lifters died. We pulled the old engine apart one day (import engien fitted) and the rings and liners/block were 100 percent. No measureable wear and you could still see the hone marks...
