May be a kombi stove top....!
but looks like some sort of off road sump protector , a must for all you mud bashin freaks out there.

Thats a factory sump guard for a type 1 case, I have them in book somewhere, they may have come on country buggies.

or a sump guard...... , though it wouldnt protect much on mine - my sump hangs below standard .

if you refer to your "Modifications for difficult journeys hand book" you will find the tech drawing for this part, the sump guard for type 1 engines,as well as a whole lot of other nifty bash guards mods and tips.
