Can my beetle handle the commute?
Hi,
I own a 68 beetle and I drive an hour between Brisbane and the Gold Coast 5 days a week to get to work.
It is a pretty smooth run along the highway, except of an afternoon when I crawl for about 15-20 minutes when I get into Brisbane.
Do you think the bug can handle the commute?
It is in good condition and hasn't broken down on me in the year and a half I have had it.
I would love everyone's thoughts.

It sure will ..just keep it serviced regularly ie at least 6 monthly with the miles you do and it should last forever........ just check with the
brissy guys here for the best local mechanic and happy motoring:thumb

What speed do think I could sit on with out pushing it too hard? Obviosly the speed limit is 100-110, but would this be flogging it?

If you give it regular oil changes and tune ups it should handle the trip and the speed limit no problems :bounce

If you are serious get yourself an oil temp gauge and drive by that.
You should cruise at no more than 110 for long periods.
I have found i follow the speedo. I can do 110 @ 110 degrees.
Might want to get stand offs for the deck lid to let more air in.
You wont be doing 110 on a 40 degrees summers day though.

Thanks heaps,
I wrote off my mazda the other day and have been driving the bug to work - wasn't sure if could handle the commute.
I was hoping it would be ok, so I wouldn't have to by another souless car

Keep on top of the maintenance, particularly oil level and changes and you shouldn't have a problem.
In recent years there seems to have emerged a school of thought that says anything over about 20 yrs old has to be babied along at 80 kmh. Personally
I don't buy that. Use 'em like the designers intended I say .

yeah the cruising speed is 110kph, they were designed to go at that speed all day long since the 1930's
