Is replacing the 1800 dualcarb a bad idea?


G'day.

This is something I have been contemplating for a while. Removing the stock dual carbs from my 1800 van, and fabricating an assembly to plop a dual throat of roughly the same flow on in the middle.

The main reason I've considered this is reliability. The carbies have always been a nightmare to me. Especially the central idle circuit.

No matter how many times they have been adjusted, cleaned etc, they just never work right...well for long anyway.

If I were to put on a single centralised carby would acceleration lag be noticable, because of the extra distance?

Also, would icing up be a problem?

I Know I'd love to retrofit EFI, but I'm clueless with post carburettor engines, and the dollarific value of EFI is a little rich for my poor old van.

Is fitting a single carb a completely stupid idea, or does it have any merit?

people "have" fitted progressives

BUT.............................

you live in Vic??? and icing will be a problem because of the longer runs.
A type 4 motor cant get heat and you will have no pre heaters.

I dont belive in those electric heat tapes that wrap around manifolds.

personally i would invest $750ish in a set of webers and get rid of the stock carbs.

I think you will find with your origional solex Carbies that there sucking air through the throttle shafts, get these replaced / rebushed and you wont have any probs with the idle

replacing the whole set up would be better with webbers but you will be paying lots more money

What Dave said....you missed an EFI setup off a porsche frrom ebay...sold for $100 or there abouts COMPLETE....of a 1700.Included ecu etc..would have been ideal.Oh well...

Thanks everyone!

Shame about the ebay porsche setup. That would have been nice. I don't mind a bit of work so get something happening. Especially if it's cheaper.
