Flywheel/ring gear/flex plate question
Guys, what other ring gears will work with the stock starter when you do a motor conversion? I need to find a flex plate with the ring gear as part of
it, to use on my custom flywheel arrangement.
Do the auto typpe 3's and kombis have the ring gear on a flex plate or welded to the torque converter?
will the ring gear on other cars say Datsun L motors etc etc also work ok?

not sure what your after, might need more info.
All air-cooled 12V ring gears are the same (teeth wise). Not sure what the auto set-up is though.
Don't know what other cars use the same tooth profile, I expect not many. Maybe early subarus. My MX6 was certainly not even close.

The Type 3 autos have no ring gear on the flex plate.

thanks guys. so when you do a motor conversion you need to modify the flywheel to run the VW ring gear?

Basically yes, unless you use a motor and flywheel that the ring gear will slip straight onto.
As for the flex-plate question, every auto I've ever seen has had the ring gear mounted to the torque converter, not the flex plate, including
VW, Austin, Chrysler, Holden, Ford......

people that sell adaptor kits sell and adaptor flywheel in the kit. It has the VW ring gear and clutch but the other engines crank pattern.
This is what I did to my flywheel

Basically I got a VW ring gear machined off (one of the one piece flywheel ring-gear combos), I then got that pressed and welded onto the mazda
flywheel.

thanks guys. thats answered my question.
Kruizin, dunno which ford and holden you were lookin at but they all have the ring gear welded to the flex plate, which is then bolted to the torque
converter
