Kombi rear wheel bearing removal
As I need to replace the rear wheel bearings in my '77 Kombi soon, I decided to give it a practice run on my spare parts bus on the week end.
What a job!!! Nothing like doing it on the beetle, which was a breeze.
The problem is you can't remove the spacer with the bearings still installed. I tried a sliding hammer bearing puller but the bearings
wouldn't budge.
In the end I ruined the cage on the roller bearing to get the rollers out the way, remove the spacer and pushed the bearings out from behind.
So what are you supposed to do if your just re-greasing the bearings?? How do you get them out without doing damage?
That also goes to the seal closest to the GB (I suppose that should be replaced anyway).
Looks like I'll have to allow a day just to do both sides

If it is like the 68-69, take out the stub axle then you can get behind them with a drift makes it easier

The axle was already out.
The problem is the spacer between the bearings can't come out, the bearings are in the way and you can't move the spacer far enough sideways
to get at the back of the bearing with a drift.
Once I got the cage and rollers out of the way (ruined by then!!) it was easy.

On my twin cab the inner[motor side] one has a circlip on it I think, did you remove this ,I personally have only changes the outter one which was
very easy to change ,already had both changed earlier before I had to change the axle assembly
