Rust in Kombi windscreen

Hi all

I am looking at a Kombi camper *Very nice* but it has some rust bubbling under the windcreeen rubber along the bottom. Is this a serious/costly problem?

Cheers

Rust is always a problem and needs to be dealt with ASAP. It's a case of 'A stitch in time....'

Rip the windscreen and possibly the dashboard out as soon as you get it, treat the rust, cut it and patch it if necessary, paint it and reassemble it. You will never look back! :thumb

If it all seems a bit too hard, you can take it to a panel beater, but you will save a heap of money if you at least remove the dashboard yourself to make it easy for them. :)

You can have this repaired if It is not too bad, get a flat tool or something you can lift up the seal so you can have a look, if it has a few small holes it is not too bad, you can get replacement sections for this area from the UK at http://www.justkampers.com,  or a good panel shop that can fabricate sheet metal sections can repair it, DONT USE BOG, metal only.
If there is rust in the A pillers, it may be a good idea to give it a miss
The place you should be looking at is the channel at the bottom of the front clip on the inside of the bus, behind the front kick boards, this is where the water that gets past the windscreen will collect, run your hands along the inside of this channel, if it has not been leaking for long and there is little rust you should be ok, if it is severe you will see it from the out side! The section under the step rubbers is also a place to look if there is any rust in the front, under the floor mat in the front is another place to look if water has been getting in!
Minor rust is not a problem, IF you get the right people to repair it, if it is not too bad and you want the bus, use the fact that the repairs needed will have to be taken into consideration in the purchase price.

Thanks guys. Yeah i have used the rust thing as a bargaining tool the cars at a yard though. And we know what they are like. They are asking $6000 for it they reckon its got an original 91000 km on it. But they dont have any documentation to prove it, but it feels like it may have when i drove it. I said $4700 if you can prove the km. They rang me back and said 5k. But the rust i said the rust......

Have a good look at the engine and gearbox is it CLEAN dose it have any leaks, check for these after your next test drive, if you have looked the whole bus over and it passes, go for it sounds OK to me! I paid five for mine fifteen years ago.
