Another Central Locking query


Hi guys,

I've done a bit of browsing but haven't found anything definitive: I have a '58 beetle and want to fit central locking, what is the best way of doing this? Some of the other posts on this forum indicated that it is very difficult for the older bugs, has anyone on here fitted central locking to an older dub?

Also, the drivers side lock is knackered - how does the bugger come out, so that I can take it to a locksmith? Are any replacement parts available?

you will need to fit later model door locks as they have better levers on them to allow you to fit electric solenoids.

fitted central locking to the two front doors on my 76 bus, didnt take that long... once i figured out how i was going to put them in it only liike 45mins per side. then about 30 mins to wire it all up and mount the central unit... definantly worth it not having to bugger around with keys getting in and out!

I am looking into this as we speak, as the car will have keyless entry as well as the central locking. I have some spare doors I am playing with to start off, but there are a few things I see an issue with.

1. Drivers door lock is by way of key physically locking the outside button.
2. Passenger door seems stiff to open properly by way of moving the interior handle.

These are the immediate issues. Both of these I think I have sovled but will be doing more with it tonight and in the comming week.

The drivers dorr seems to present the biggest issues. Currently I am looking at replaceing the door catch etc with a passenger/usa set so that it operates like the passenger door, and thus does not have any outside locks (great security!!).

The next thing is to then rebuild the interior door mechanisms as these have 40+ years worth of wear and lack of lubricant. I have gone through the passenger door on the car and it now operates 400% better than when we first took delivery of the vehicle.

Advise is to get a 4 door kit and use two solenoids per door, One pushing the other pulling. Think outside the square and the early type doors can have the central locking without the conversion to the later model mechanisms. Good lcuk and will post pics once I have finish with the mechanicals. :D
