bootlid to fit the conversion
Just finished the bootlid for my kombi, neatly hides the V8.
have driven past many cops at the beach n they havent ever looked twice at me,
been driving another car at the moment so im doin as much to it that i can now, such as cleaning up the plumbing so its either supported solidly in
the chasis rails or behind my bumpers out of view,
i also welded up a new rear crossmwmber and bumper to fit over the harmonic balancer and filter, ill get those fotos up some time
now it looks like a relatively normal "kombi van" ............................................................................. for a non VW
enthusiast hahaha
kevo

the old bootlid i bought to feed to the grinder

wana paint it soon but im at tafe all the time so cash is the major factor hehe

yer i was stoked with the result,
i bolted my new welded crossmember on and also extended the bumper out 25mm (just enough so that it doesnt look pushed out of place ya know)
with that all on you cant see much of the engine at all, i will show you guys 2,ora when i get home from work n post up some photos,
the V8 goes amazing mate, I CANT GET OVER THAT BEAUTIFUL NOTE IT PUMPS OUT!!!!!!! i love it! i get 12L per 100km, im still running the standard 2L
transporter gearbox (thats the one with a longer 4th compared to the kombi boxes), it sits on 2500 doing 110km/h, personally im stoked i chose the
purring 8 over a suba, always loved V8s and its something different in a VW, everyone seems to have suba kombies, not that there bad at all haha,
just about nearly finished re routing the plumbing pipes through the bumpers so ya cant see them,

The gearing has everything to do with the revs....for a set gear ratio it wouldnt matter whether you had a 4cyl, 6cyl or a V8 they would all be doing
the same revs. The advantage of the V8 over a 4cyl, would be that you could gear it taller than what the 4cyl could pull, but the torque of the V8
could still handle it.

heres the shots of my new rad setup all neat this time
you can see how i moved the crossmember bach 20mm to give
some room
you think you could spot the difference between a stock bus
n this hmmhmmm???
i replaced the "in" coolant pipe near the alternator belt
with a copper pipe, it was stressin me out seeing the belt so close to my radiator hose with the last setup!!!
the new HOlden VZ V8 ali radiator
new piping through chasis, cant soo much in this photo
tho...
no more dodgy plumbing going unter the bull bars, in just
magically dissapears into the bumper now, not even i know where it goes haha

That's definitely not a stock box.
I have a 2L box with an Albins very tall 0.70:1 4th, and large 31" tyres, and I sit on 2500rpm at 110kph.
Either your tacho is rooted and giving inaccurate readings (and speedo too probably), or you have one tall mother of a 4th gear in there (~0.64:1).
The stock 2L came with a 0.88 which should mean 3400rpm at 110kph.
If your lucky you might have gotten a 0.82 4th which would still be around ~3200 at 110kph.
I don't think VW made anything taller than that.

I thought I must of being using a broken calculator cos I worked out a very tall 4th gear ratio to only have 2500rpm @110km/h and standard
wheels/tyres.
Kevo I wonder whats going on??
Let hope its not it not an over reading speedo as no ones likes to be going slower than you think.
Regardless, great job on the conversion and great looking kombi.
Is the V8 quieter than the kombi motor??

You would need to be doing 2500 @ 110 to get 12L / 100km out of one of those motors..... when I had mine with 1600 kombi box, 31" tyres it would do
3200 @ 100 and get 24L / 100km.... which is why I got rid of it.

i will set my parents car at 110 and drive beside them to sw3ee how accurate my speedo is, tacho- i may as well get an accurate reading from a decent
gauge, speco or somethin around the $350 mark,
but............ iv'e blown a head gasket in the v8 so ill have to do this later on
While the heads are off they're being p & p'd, replacing top end with another set of 10.5:1 pistons (forged) and im replacing standard cam with a
PIPER 170/10 stage 2 camshaft, along with the PIPER cam timing gears, new rings n that too,
this will probably take me about 2 months (im a student remember...) so ill let you know when its back on the road,
cheers for the feedback guys
cant wait too see how the burnouts go after this work!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but funny enough, with two mufflers every1 i showed it too said it sounded JUST like a stock aircooled 2L!!! i wasnt happy about that, i wanted that
v8 growl!
even when i put my foot down with two mufflers its sounds stock,
but ya can tell now

from when i first finished the conversion, there is a lot i have changed and improved so i'll let ya know those details to save you going the long

I'll have to make up a V8 kombi club in perth soon hehe
