If you want The Best, you really need to talk to them directly. You've gone beyond the "package" deal at that point. They can build just about anything you want, but it will cost you!

What are you thinking of running this transaxle in.....
One of the biggest world gear manufactures for VW transaxles are here in Australia “Albins”. And there are many people in Australia that build better boxes then the one you are talking about. If you are talking of putting a transaxle into a buggy or something like that, your money these days is better spend on another type of transaxle like the Renault Un 4 and 5 or something really good like a complete Albins trans, a Mendeola trans or even one of the best international racing transaxles made right here in WA, a Graydon trans. If you are still wanting a kombi box, give me a call Neal and I’ll put you on to the guy that does all the race boxes transaxles here in WA

street vw
Graydon went down the tube I was told and not making them any more , any way would I spend $40000.00 on a gear box ! umm let me think >>>>>>>>>>>>> no !

I now Country is doing lots of boxes

but I was looking at the usa manual box from Rancho or tansform some of these are around US $800.00 + housing

I be putting a 200hp wrx motor be hind it .The un5 needs gear changes as there too tall , this is bucks the last gear set max purchased was $3000.00 and the renault turbo donk would of killed it .

I give mark a call and see what he purchased from transform

Then again Jak is having a good run from his L box

MIne is holding up suprisingly well considering I am thrashing the shit out it every day...grabbing second and depending on the type of shift, can smoke it for as long as I like. Can you believe the stock cv's are still holding even when one has come 70%undone twice(finally got the star washers).

Craig...you probably know more of what is exactly in it as Spinks built it for Tony.

Hey seagul, did you say the un5 box is too tall...when you have 250 odd hp at the wheels and a flat torque curve, there is no such thing as too tall.

Im keen on the bus box as well.
But are they actually stronger than the T1 box.
The very low ratio diff may be, but 1st gear ?
Can you get decent highway gears for em.
Length is an issue as well when your runnin a subaru engine.
I think I read u were runnin a bus box in your beetle Craig.
Whats in that?

Hi

My built-up Type 1 box was worth about $5000. It had 4 Albins gears, Quaife LSD and was built on a 76 low mileage box.

Kombi boxes are OK for off road, but when you change the ratios for a street box you end up with very weak teeth cross sections on the gears, not to mention the gear selector problems these conversions have.

I’m fitting a G50 now which cost $5000, fitting one is not for the feint hearted.

Boof, keep those Beetle CVs, they will act as fuse.

also....if you go porsche be prepared for expensive parts....like I just paid $50 for a shifter bush.

Clutches are also astronimical in cost compared to a performance vw clutch.

I'm kind of lucky that my bug initially came with a G50, 930 CV's and romac billet axles as it's not a cheap excercise at all....

My Hillclimb beetle gearbox: Rhino case, HD side plates, Quaife diff, Albins gears. Built by John Spinks.

CraigT.

Did I read u were running a detroit locker in one of yours.
Thats the beetle I am refering too.
I imagined this was a bus box?
I would be intersted to speak to this Baker crowd if they can build a tough T1 box for reasonable money.
Might be a better way than an imported box.

Good idea...I just ordered a 'budget' clutch for the bug today...a 6 puck custom for $450.

Here is a quick plug for http://Performance9.com.au Stan and the guys are more than helpful. If anyone goes Porsche they're the guys to talk with.

They also pointed out to me that the gearbox bell housing had been cut down on mine unlike yours...hence I had the clutch problems....live and learn I guess when you buy someone elses projects.

Hi Reub

Thats who I bought my G50 from, good people.

I had a long talk to the guy that did my adaptor (Unicap) about clucthes, he is not keen on the Porsche cluthes at all, so I going 200 1V Kenedy, not sure about the driven plate yet and a Saab hydrualic release bearing. Im getting an alloy ring made up, to bolt to my flywheel which will support the Porsche starter ring gear in the correct postion for my auto VW starter.

When you ordered your 6 puck custom, was there any mention of the spline type?

There was no mention of spline type as they previously supplied a 930 turbo clutch plate and the new one will have the same spline and offset as the original clutch that was in the car. Stan runs the same one in his 993 porsche gt2 replica that has over 500hp so it should be ok. He's even going to give me some money back on the clutch supplied to me upon it's return. We found out the offset of the splined component of the clutch was only incorrect for mine as the gearboc was shortened.

Bill from Unicap is also a great source of information and is happy to share it.

Got it from performance 9. My mate Ian in cairns has a 4 puck in his bug. It wasn't too bad as a passenger. I'd suggest my 6 puck with the heavier pressure plate will be much the same, not so good in traffic....

PS...sorry seagull, don't mean to post too much in your thread...

I'll be sure to take a pic of the clutch setup I install then and report on its performance.
