Oil cooler location

Got myself an empi 8 pass cooler (without fan) this mounts outside the doghouse with lines to a remote filter and back to the original mount.
The instructions say (vaguely) to stick the cooler itself over the air inlet for the motor...this seems pretty lame- just a good way to heat up the air going into the fan.
Would it be better to remote mount the cooler elsewhere? (plenty of room near the trans) Does it need much airflow considering its much bigger than the stocker?
