36 horse power up options - not necessarily an oxymoron

I'm thinking of doing some 36 horse powerup fun. I found this link on the Samba.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=96565

Have anyone got an idea as to what carbs and manifolds could be used to make a twincarb setup, and what exhaust (preferable new or NOS) could be used on the narrow 1192 block that will exit the rear cutouts (not Okrasa thanks....lol). Want to keep it old school and simple.

probably your cheapest and most efficient power up.

My old man picked up (from where I dont know) a pair of 36hp manifolds for (I think) a pair of 28 pict carbies. They would be my first guess.

I got me some single port manifolds and carbies. I think they're early type 3 but they'd do the trick. You'd need to make up a linkage and put some electric chokes on them but they be the go I reckon. I'll take a pic of em for ya.

My mate had them on a 1200 years back and said it spun like a top with them. The carbs need a rebuild and it all needs a bit of a clean up but it's not too hard. There are kits available for them, Volkbahn sells them. Do you want them? Make me an offer. What the heck, for $50 I'll throw in a 009 dizzy to go with them. ;)

Thanks Pete - I'll see what the word is on what can be done before taking any steps. I've got some questions in for Doddy too.

I've found an Okrasa replica exhaust on CIP1 but it's too expensive for my liking. May have to get something custom made up. Where's my mate Brendan???

Onya Dave I knew you wouldn't be able to resist this subject.

Just quickly searching, there's not much that I can find the on Ken Virgin setup. Getting my hands on something original may prove hard, so do you know what his setup was? Was it similar to Okrasa Pre-A spec?

Ideally, I'm looking for the word on what twin carb setup would work - be it 28 pict, and what aftermarket exhaust I can use? I've found an Okrasa / Abarth style reproduction but that's big bickies US$.

Keep the tips coming. :thumb

Don't you worry Brendan, that is certainly covered on the Samba link. I was thinking more along the lines of you educating me on welding skills.

Squize there origional 36Hp carbies 28pic but you can use the 40hp carbies 28pics or even 30pics of a 1300 engine they will work and probally easier to get and set up with jets.

N02 mate, that would make it go some!

How much do you want to do to it, bolt on or more serious?
