1300 - vibration in top gear

I have just picked up a 66 1300 Beetle, in great condition overall. It drives, steers, brakes exceedingly well.
The only thing that needs "fixing" is the following.

This thing is sloooow! There is a shudder/vibration from the drive train, but only in top (4th) gear.
This weekend will be my first chance to get underneath, but any suggestions as to what to check is greatly appreciated.
BTW do beetles have oil filters? Can't remember.

may be worth checking if its running on all 4 cylinders !!!! may account for being slow and shuddery in top gear cheers steve

Before I did anything desperate, I would give it a new set of plugs, hi tension cables and maybe a new set of points and condensor and a clean out of the carby. That is get it running very well.

I'd check the engine and gearbox mounts.

Otherwise I have no suggestions.

I must have posted this topic in another section as well.
Anyhow, found #2 spark plug lead was cracked around the bakelite. Once that was replaced with a new lead, and a new set of plugs in, all is well.
Except now I have a slipping clutch, mostly going uphill.
