Passenger side lockable external handle questions

Hi all,

As I have plenty of 'computer' spare time, but very little 'work on car' spare time I thought I would ask a few questions before trying this one...

My '63 Beetle (aka: Ratty) has gone back into regular use now that my wife has gone back to work full-time. I ahve fitted the baby seat into the back and we have a small enough pram that I can get it in the car (even though I have fitted a roofrack recently).

Having fitted the baby seat to the passenger side of the vehicle I find the lack of an external keylock on the passenger side of the car to be a pain-in-the-arse. I have a number of 60's beetle drivers side door handles (with the keylock), so I am considering fitting one of these spares to the passenger side door.

Has anyone else attempted/done this to a '60's bug before? Does it work OK? Is there anything I should know about this mod that will make the job quicker and easier?

Thanks,

R :)

Hi Rossco,
I don't think You'll have any trouble...
I believe the key lock is totally inside the door handle
so, it should just bolt on...

It must drive You crazy, having to go thru the drivers door all the time...

best of luck

Lee

Thanks Lee,

I did have a close look at the spare door handle that I have and I couldn't see any reason why it wouldn't work .... but with that said, the passenger side door can be locked from inside the car, the drivers side one cannot - will this cause dramas?

Yeah, climbing through the drivers side with bub-in-arms is incredibly annoying, so if this mod is easy then it will be a must for me!

You have Me thinking now Rossco,

The outer door handle - when You turn the key,
it actually locks the push button,
or
unlocks the push button so You can push the button in and nothing happens...

The inside lever lock is something else...
You would have to lock the door with a key...
I don't think You can unlock the door, when its been locked by the handle...
as the inside door handle actually locks the door lock mechanism...
the push button Cannot un-lock this...

Lee

PS: still a better way to lock/unlock the door...

...so basically, as long as I leave the inside handle in the 'unlock' position the keylock on the outside would work. If I was to move the inside handle to the 'lock' position it would disable the outside lock.... Did I get that right?
