Another person asking for baja advice

Hi
I just got myself a baja and the person I got it off said that it had the blue plate for the baja conversion, which I have since found out is not correct. I have spoken to Dpt of Transport to find out if it was ever registered as a baja but they say it hasn't.I have to submit a Motor Vehicle Modification Application for the baja change.I need to put down the details for the wheels and tyres and the track. It already has large tyres on it. I was talking to an engineer and you are only allowed to go 1.3x wider for the Tyres & 10% bigger diameter, Track is only allowed to be 26mm wider. Does any body know the standard sizes and the maximum sizes that I can submit on my paperwork. It is a 66 body on a 63 pan.
I am also after a front bar and rear cage if anybody has any spares that they want to sell, preferably in the S.E. QLD area.
Thanks for any help.
Steve

steve what your engineer said is not quite right yes you can only go 1.3 times wider but the there is an old exemption out there for vw's as the stock wheel is so narrow.
the exemption is for a 7 inch wide rims. yes the track can only be widened by 26mm.
but the track is measured from centre of wheel to centre of wheel so to go more than 26mm wider you will also have tyre sticking out past the guards.
i would say not to many bajas are registered as bajas as they QT customer service centre computer does not reconise vw baja (most of the time they are registered as vw beetle sedan). but if you ask nicely they can make the car up. (mine is registered as a 1970 baja) so it is possible:smilegrin:
what ever you do present what you put in your application or you will find the transport inspector will not be happy. ensure your car would pass a roadworthy as the T.I. might just do a safety check as part of his inspection
bar and cage see brad at c.o.r if he cann't help you with second handyz he can make some up
hope this helps

was talking to a few baja fellas, they said (like Neil said) just register it as a vw beetle... really, the baja kit is a body kit... By all means, some cutting is done, but apparently its not fully structural.

U neva register a bug with a carerra body kit as a carrera beetle...

But this is just what i heard on the grape vine... want best advice, ring around some contacts in the industry... and even COR should be able to give u some advice.

chris thats incorrect.

a baja kit modifies placement of lights. removal or bumperbars and replacement with metal bars etc which need to meet standard ie: capped ends, full width of the car etc. tyre widths etc need to be correct as has already been stated.

you dont need a mod plate in QLD u just need the papers for the approval. which i have for my car.

it is registered as a beetle sedan not a baja but it does have the approval.

I don't think that exemption exists anymore. It used to be stated very clearly in the wheels and tyres brochure, but has been removed. Is not in the 1999 traffic act thingy either.

It would only still be valid if there was a department of transport VIB / VSB / something stating the exemption. Let me know if you know of it.

Things had 185SR14 tyres.
