thin on the inside

my kombi's right front tyre is wearing bald on the inside 2 to 3 inches of tread. All other 3 wheels are fine. Wheel alignment? or summit else?
cheers, Ian

Probably a wheel alignment problem (does the steering pull to one side?) but could also be worn ball joints (any knocking from the front suspension on rougher roads?) or something like that.

Usually, when you get a wheel alignment done, the mechanic can tell if the ball joints are worn - the wheel setting will keep changing as he moves the steering wheel.

I always insist on getting under the car with him for a good look myself - cracked rubbers etc are easy to spot.

front wheels were out 25% (or is that 25 degrees?) anyhoo....had a wheel alignment AFTER the source problem was fixed. Both tie rods (think that's what they're called) were bent. Looks like someone had jacked the car up on them. My mechanic took them off and straightened them in a vice. With wheel alignment, cost me a hundred bucks. Phew!

To check your ball joints properly find a VW shop that has a tension bar, this is applied to the upper n lower arms and levered to see if the Ball joints are stuffed.

If they are worn or loose the trailing arms will have to be removed in order to press out and in the ball joints.

Sounds like a typical tow truck driver has towed your car, they tend to wrap the lift chain around the first thing they see, which happens to be the tie rod shafts on a Kombi.

Ive seen dozens of Kombis like this.
