blup58 Ghia First Dragrace!

Brad and Alan took the Ghia Up for their first ever runs at the Drags.
Best was an easy 15.3@88mph, but a slipping clutch meant 14s will be later.
The car ran nearly 90mph on one pass so 14s are close.
Good for a first time out Brad!

Rod (48IDA) Ran a 12.92 in full street trim, muffler, with BRMs and Bridgestones and was testing out his 2-step.

He had a few minnor shifting glitches to a 12.8 but ran around 108 to 109mph an all four runs.

Yeah well done brad for getting out there and giving the ghia a boot-full. I think with some more seat time (including getting the reaction time down), you'll get some great numbers! Glad you didn't break anything so we could drive home rather than calling a tow-truck! :thumb

Thanks heaps to Dave and Pete for the help as its all new to me as well!

I took a couple of low res video files but just trying to figure out how to load them up properly. Both Rod's and Brad's cars sounded great with the stingers screaming in harmony!

Thanks guys!!!

Yeah....as Alan would know there was some serious nervous energy being expelled on the drive out, I'm sure he was ready to tell me to shut up.

Big thanks to Al, Rod, Pete and Dave for all their help on the night.

There were some serious weapons out there that night and then me in my little 40 year old volksy but as the guys said just go and have some fun.....so thats what I did, and I will definately be back!

Once again thanks Rod, Pete and Dave - I know its probably one of those things once you've done it no big thing but for first timers like me it was pretty huge - it was great to have such patient guys who were all just down to earth and in it for fun!!

Thanks agian for the loan of the helmet Al - need to get the blue bug going and hopefully we can have a showdown at warwick

Thanks to Alan H. for making it out there to say g'day.

Cheers

Brad

Rod's bug is a 43000 mile '61 bug that has a 2275 and swingaxle,
that has run a best of 11.92 in race trim,
and now 12.9 in full street trim (bridgestones muff, and belt)
It was an Andra record holder.
I did the tranny, and myself, Pete and Rod all pitched in with the engine that Rod bought from Mike Nash.

The engine is a welded 82 stroke ,94 bore with VW heads and FK87 cam. Very basic combo with very good heads that Craig at Crankshaft, and myself, have made some improvements to over the last 5 or so years.(44x37.0)
It also now has a CB aluminium case and sump.
If you do a search on Dak-a-Tak's posts you will find out heaps on the engine and car...or just ask,
we are happy to share info. The more the merrier.

Peter Page built the car for his long time buddy, Rod(35 years!)
from a stock 1200 bug that they bought from Hardings.

Brads (and Als ) effort was real hard core. Nothing better than seeing someone drive to the track , change the exhaust have a go and then drive home. Especially for a first timer. Your turn now Al.
As for my effort I drove like an old mole , luckily the car (buillt by dak-a-tak) is such a weapon. For those of you who like numbers I ran a 15 flat at 108m.p.h. my slowest ET ever but one of my bigger m.p.h.

Good to see you on here Rod - well for an "old mole" a 12.9 in street trim wasn't too shabby! I'm really looking forward to running at Warwick to give the type IV a thrashing - it won't be quick (stock cam and heads) but I'm sure it will be fun!

Cheers for being there on sat night to help ease the nerves for brad - nice having a couple of volksies running down the track together!

Rod, it's alway great to see what you guys are up to, can't wait for Warwick we're a bit starved for racing here in Adelaide!!

Do you drop the belt for your "race trim" passes?

Bring on a type 4 drag car Damo!
If you choose to go for a full time drag car rather than a street/occasional drag car, think about Mike Kristens car with out engine for All Motor duties.

Just wondering what compression you are running with the FK87 ? And what sort of launch RPMs you were using launching on the 2 step with radials ??
And lastly - how you have the two step wired up ?

I hope I can make somewhere near that power !! Awesome for a street car.
Thanks

Comp ratio is currently unknown, but would not be above 11 because there are no valve notches in the Mahle pistons, and the chambers are quite large.
Piston-to-valve clearance was the controling limit for comp.
If I had to guess to save my life I would say mid 10:1

Rod was leaving at between 4500 and 5500(trying different things for his first go with the two step).
Engine and car likes the higher rpm launch.
He has the switch wired to a thumb button on the wheel.

Pete or Rod can answer your q's in more detail.
