Head Bolt helicoils??
I've been asked if I want to buy a used and abused late type 3. I'm keen but owners 're-built' the motor himself (a real back
yarder!!) and said the head bolts have been helicoiled crooked and then re-done. Is the block likely to be stuffed? As the motors not in, it’s never
been run. (it has new P&C + bearings, and recon. heads).
Is it worth anything? I guess he’ll be asking a bit to recover the money spent on parts for the re-build.

They're usually referred to as "case-savers" in VW circles. If they were done crooked for 8mm studs, then re-done for 10mm, you should
be OK. If they were just straightened up on the original size, you'll need a new case.

I'd personally be offerring him a lesser amount under the assumption that the motor is not up to scratch. As for him trying to cover his costs,
we all know that rarely works.
New case or replacement motor - chances are that he has stuffed up the current motor, but check Autostik's suggestion first, it makes sense. Be
careful with backyard rebuilds, often a lot of stuff gets overlooked. Ask him if he owns a torque wrench!

Thanks for the advise. If the price is right I like the idea of adding a type 3 to the line up. I do have a spare type 1 case that could be used if it
is not salvagable (I assume you can convert them?).
I'll see what he's after and do a closer look.

yeah they are the same thing, but check that the Beetle motor has the bolt holes for the Type 3's rear engine support bar to bolt to. Some of the
earlier Beetle motors don't have the necessary holes.

Thanks Col,
it's a 1600 twin port, so I should be OK.

You might still need to add a couple of tapped holes, but it sounds like you could get a bunch of good parts (along with another car) for a decent
price.
