Master cylender- swap, rebuild, new?
My master cylender shat itself on the weekend, seeing as I have to fix it anyway, should I upgrade to a dual circuit cylender? What do I have to
do?
Also what are my options on the cylender itself, are new ones available? what about re-sleeving?
Oh yeah, it's a 1960 bug.

R U trying to keep the car original ?
Dual circuit is the best/safest, but this was not original in1960 !
Call Vintage VW, if your in NSW. they should have a replacement.

If you go dual... which is better you have to bend the brake lines to make them fit...
no problems just be carefull you dont kink the steel lines
take the fuel tank out its easier to adjust them to fit.
fitting the dual circuit reservior is a different story
getting it high enough to allow gravity to work with brake fluid, and not trap any air is a bit more difficult
I used a Passat reservior and made nylon bushes to adapt the container to the cylinder making it sit on top
Make sure you use the correct brake fluid resistant flex hose blue stuff by VW it works well.
Either brake cylinders should be available but if you carnt get them in German ATE brand dont buy them.
VVDS has both types ATE available.

I'd like to keep it original, but it is a daily driver. But I now know what it's like to completely lose your brakes.
So Dave, the dual circuit reservoirs mount in a different location? Is it possible to mount it the same way the later bugs do so I can at least sorta
keep it stock(ish)?

No I have a dual fitted to my 56 Oval when I had the Makio disc on it, but have removed them and it works great with the stock size wheel
cylinders.
The Orange smoothie is a different story as it has 68 Front Discs and Type 3 late model drums on the rear... and again no problems all work fine.
that the one i have the reservior fitted on top of the master cylinder.
Pat yes you could mount the reservior in the same place as a later model, but a lot more buggerising around
