1975 Kombi Twin Cab


whats a 1975 twin cab worth with no rust, fairly new paint and good mechanics?? What should i look out for ??
Any problem spots???

new paint can sometimes hide rust?
but if its in good nick $5k or more depending how good
also depends on the seller he might not know what its worth twin cabs are reasonably rare

Crew Cabs Rock


Generally speaking, Low Light Crew Cabs are considered to be the most desirable. They just look nice. Plus in say 72, you got a nice big engine bay for a 2 litre, making the car that bit longer.

Only hassle is these gates are even rarer than the usual shorter ones on other models - not that any decent gates are easy to find. But they are around, just hiding away in people's workshops and garages.

Rust in the tray, rear tray/backwall area and gates are the major concern of the crew cab lover. So pull up the back seat, check the mounts and that it's got all it's original bits, crawl into the tardis-like underseat area and look for signs of H2O.

Hard to fix, expensive to do and much hand panel work to get the job done right in these area's - are are the rear sills. Lot's of metal inside and damn fiddly to fix.

Pay thousands for clean gates alone! Other things to look out for are opening rear quarter lights...do they work and are the seels good. Some some reason people from o/s feak about the rear quarter lights, perhaps UK didnt get them...dunno. Getting genuine rubbers for them is a hassle.

I'd say that a bottom line figure would be like a grand, if the gates were crap, bent etc., and the tray rusty or dinted. Many had a hard life after all.

A really good one....well a mate sold one for about 4k that I hear someone now wants 8k for as they've done more work, and it's worth it.

Paint, motor and general condition add value. You'd be hard pressed to get a crap one and restor it properly under 10 or even 20k professionally.

But...

As europe and the US has run out of splits, and beetle prices have bombed out...early bays are now ultra-desirable, especially Westfalia's, Devons etc campers and Crew Cabs.

Early bays in the UK and Europe are now the fasted growing collector item (so my UK/EU mates tell me). They've simply run out of splitters, or the ones that are still around are just crap or bodged.

Bay windows are becomming the new split (wait for the agro replies) - I've got both! so I'm talking about people that are getting into type 2's - Splits are serious money and seriously hard to source good ones to restore in one's own lifetime.

In 2001 I saw a rusty as all f++k ex German Army Crew Cab at Van Fest in the UK - the owner wanted (and got on the day) over $10,000.00AU for it. Over here I'd put it in the 1k to 2k bracket. It was rooted.

So the price depends where it's going and what people want to do with it.

I'd pay more for a low light model, and the number one item on the purchase or bail list is the condition of the gates, then tray floor ---- the rest can be fixed with time and money.

Crew Cabs are rare - they also seat 6 easy and will carry a full ton. A 2.0 litre engine bay model's rear tray will fit a double bed, so plenty of room - they are therefore sought after, but not as many people want them - or want to pay the money for them.

I'd say that low lights are worth more than later ones like the 75, just beacuse they are earlier and prettier.

I'd say that if the Crews got okay gates and an okay tray and not too bashed, then 2k-2.5k would be okay - think about the money you're going to need to fix it. Indian are the experts, and have lots of Crew Cab stuff, and I think that they now have pressed repair sections for gates, but Crew cabs are special, and not to be rushed into.

If you're into Crew Cabs - talk to Kimm at Indian - he's the chief and will save you time and money when it comes to buying a lemon or a gem.

Of course you simply have to lower it, then the weight and balance makes it a dream to drive, emply or loaded. Bias? Me? Yes. Of course.

If only every Volkswagen was as cool as a crew cab. But what the hell, it's a crew cab right - just buy it or pass on the info to me.

I am lucky enough to own a 72 crew cab with a 2 litre engine and they are rare. I have not seen another 72 in Brisbane yet. I love me crew cab and have spent plenty of $$$ on it. I have had many offers to sell it, but there is no way I would.

I have spoken to Kimm at Indian and he really knows his stuff. He told me that the 72 is the pick of the bunch. His crew cab is a 71 as he could not find a 72 at the time.

Owning a crew cab I keep am eye out for them. You will not find a crew cab that doesn't need money spent on it for under $5000. Good ones with no work to do start around $7000 to $8000 and go up to how much you are willing to pay.

There is a guy on this site who has been looking for a crew cab for around $5000 for at least 3 months and is still looking.

Well, I am packing my crew cab up tonight and taking my family camping tomorrow.

Hell.....If the low light crew cabs are going to be the new splitty's , I better do a good job restoring my 70'. And I better do up my dropsides as it sounds worth the effort. Only problem is I've cut the rear guards for planned 33inch tyres so I guess it wont be worth as much as an original. Anyway I never plan on selling it! Maybe after I've crossed every desert.......

Well finally we have got our TWIN-CAB, it's not a '72mdl but at least it's a twin-cab & it's ours!!!!
We've been looking for months & know exactly just hard these are to come by.
We picked ours up for $1500,have spent $875 to get it on the road with 12months rego and cann't wait to start doing it up to our likeing ,only 5 minutes ago I just bought a set of mags for it.....I'M STOKED!

Plus anyone else interested in buying a twin-cab '77mdl, 2ltr mags etc etc contact me and I put in contact with a fella who has to sell his, Cheers.
P.S I will be changihg our name from ute-less to type2truck soon! :D:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce

hi i got a 72 crew cab and was wondering if any one could help me with some information on the rear quarter lights?is that what those holes are in the back,big circles,are for what do the lights look like and can u get them?and should i cover the holes untill i do,any info would be great.....:thumb

Crew Cab Connection


Wow, we thought that this was a small club....but seems not. Of course it was just a joke really to start with...but perhaps it can be something more.

Unofficially, the club chief is Kimm at Indian who's got the most low down grunter ever...

I can post a quick website and information for Crew Cabs if people are interested. More than happy to share info and stories - so just U2U me with yer email and I'll letcha know whats going on.

Might get to 5 members! - I guess we could extend membership to single cabs and panel vans too as associates...as commercials are the only way to go.

Thanks for the interest, seems that a private joke could turn into a seriously fun thing.

First Meeting....Nambucca....perhaps we can have trophiys, who can cram the most stuff under the back seat?
